This is what happens when you mash up a romance novel writer and the horror genre. The results are....interesting, I guess. One time there's blood and splatter and gory scenes and next page they're making out? Like Anna (from Anna and the French Kiss) got a machete and fullfilled her long time dream of starring in real life American Horror Story. You get my point. The killer was revealed too soon also, and his motivation wasn't convicing. In any case, this book was engaging and I can't help but applaud Stephanie Perkins for that. As far as I'm concerned, it only took me a day to finish it

No suspense, nothing scary. Subpar killer.

I went into this book without very high hopes, I'd been so excited to read it a while back and ended up putting it on the back burner (not literally) after reading a few reviews which just seemed mad at it. And let me tell you, the only thing I'm mad at is myself for taking so long to pick it up!

This book was perfect for me, as someone who only really read YA contemporary romance up until this past month or so I feel like this was definitely one of the best books to read whilst transitioning into other genres, I got my romance, which was absolutely FABULOUS may I just add, I loved the whole relationship build up and the development of makani's and ollie's relationship through the book, they just really had me swooning (and mentally screaming JUST LOVE EACH OTHER ALREADY!!!) but then there was always a twist of "who the hell knows when the next murder is coming??" To snap me back into reality and had me sat back on the edge of my seat in anticipation!

I found this book after watching the Netflix adaptation and wanted to see how the book was. They’re honestly very different, at least enough that I didn’t know who the killer would be in this book. This is an instance though that I am glad I watched the movie first before seeing the book, because it helped me appreciate the movie still while enjoying reading.

It felt like an episode of Glee - so over-the-top that I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be satire. I like slow burn psychological thrillers and this was not that. I felt like the characters behaved bizarrely. I did LOVE the Makani & Ollie though!
(I should add that I don't like YA & didn't realize that's what this was until it was too late

Alright.
We'll call this 3.5- there were some slasher movie quality kills in this book.

When the beginning of the book felt like the beginning of Scream, I was pumped. The characters are fine, ordinary characters. There were some great suspenseful moments - particularly when people realized their personal items had been rearranged- because isn't that something that creeps us all out? The paranoia that your privacy has been violated but you aren't sure why? It definitely plays into a common fear.

But lemme say this-
When the killer is revealed, I was like, "okay, okay, what's the reason."
Then the killer's motive was revealed and it felt like such a letdown. I actually said out loud, "that's it?" Am I being too harsh maybe? It was just super underwhelming.

And speaking of a letdown-
Makani's constant anxiety about her history. When you learn what it is, it's also a "oh.... that's it?"

The killer's motive and Makani's secret are underdeveloped. Stephenie Perkins has a great ability to create horrific scenes and build that tension- now she just needs to bulk up the rationale to make her stories even better.
