What a deliciously weird and wonderful little novella. Imbued with ennui and melancholia throughout, I savoured the tone in every vignette. The unnamed narrator is detached and deadpan funny and her chronic illnesses, unemployment, tragic dating life and depression are explored in ways both funny and sincere – a fine balancing act Butcher-McGunnigle completely nails. This had just the right amount of sincerity and pathos for my taste. Loved!

On a self-help forum I found for depersonalisation disorder, they use the abbreviation ‘DP’ instead of typing out the name in full. I’ve started using this abbreviation when I am mentioning it in conversation. ‘I feel really anxious because of the DP,’ I say. But he says, ‘DP? Double penetration? Sorry I can’t think of anything else but double penetration when you say DP.’

This very slim volume published by Giramondo here in Australia is a kind of novella in fragments by this young NZ author. The style is highly ironic and almost aphoristic, exploring the point of view of a 20-something woman navigating her way through unemployment or precarious employment and precarious sexual encounters. I'm not sure if it would resonate with everyone, but despite my advanced age I found this utterly hilarious. So enjoyable.

read this in one day - such a REAL little novella. i found it mimicked my own inner monologue which was comforting in a way. made me feel comfortable and not ashamed of my own scepticism and pessimism toward life.

Dark, fatalistic, deadpan. I would have loved this book when I was 25.
