Rooney's writing always amazes me, it's so poignant and honest. Somehow it feels like it's just a stream of consciousness, yet it feels like every single word is chosen with such care. This book is about the complex relationships of characters who, let's be honest, aren't at all likeable, but that's kind of the point. They're all narcissistic and self-absorbed and very much flawed, and that's what makes them interesting. They're so human.

a frustrating read! i think i prefer normal people, though maybe that’s cuz it was my first foray into contemporary lit fic and now i am more critical… who knows. anyway this was a FRUSTRATING read GOD these people are comically bad at communicating!!!!!! that’s the point but i feel like in normal people i kind of understood why they were doing what they were doing but in this…??!! idk what frances was on about half the time. insufferable (and sometimes relatable! - i suppose that’s the point of sally rooney!!). nick pissed me off too do not get it twisted i couldn’t stand a single character in this book i think they should all collectively stop thinking about themselves and their woes it would do them a world of good. watch an episode of gossip girl, have a laugh. i do still really like sally rooneys writing her prose is very blunt and it feels very reeeeal idk. not even sure what to give this cuz i tore through it but i don’t know if i enjoyed reading it neccesarily… 3.25/5?????

Pretentious, unlikable people, armchair activism, and a slew of problems that can be solved with just communicating.

This book definitely wasn’t for me. As I read the book I kept questioning where it was all going, and finished the book to learn it didn’t go anywhere. Nothing happened. The character gets diagnosed with endometriosis, which adds nothing to the story. The character’s father drinks, which adds nothing to the story. The privileged characters love sitting and talking about communism, capitalism, politics, etc, but it doesn’t move beyond just the conversation and, once again, it adds nothing to the story.

My interpretation, I don’t know if correct, is that this book is meant to emulate real life, and, like in real life, there is no end goal, things don’t happen for a reason. If you like that sort of thing, then I guess this book is for you. If you like to read to explore different worlds or escape life, skip it.
