I'm not usually a fan of book two of a series, but this one wins!
Diana and Matthew growing as a couple was beautiful to read. Gallowglass? Do I even need to say a word about our beautiful man? But what really got me in this was Diana's relationship with her father, and Phillipe. Her and Phillipe's goodbye had me sobbing so hard I had to take a break!

At first, I expected something worse. The first book wasn’t THAT good, but wasn’t bad either. And since that cliché ending, I thought this book would be predictable from bottom to top. But, surprisingly, it wasn’t.

Still, I don’t like the idea of Matthew knowing every important person in 16th century. Elizabeth the 1st, okay, I can deal with that
Spoiler(Matthew is her spy or whatever, because who cares)
. With Elizabeth there’s Cecil, which is acceptable. But knowing Christopher Marlowe? Not buying it, not really. Marlowe is also a demon and really crappy one, if you ask me. Then there is this matter called William Shakespeare. Who are you, Harkness, that you can write shitload of stuff about Will? Do you know him personally or you have proof that he wasn’t a writer but just some douchebag who stole ideas and works from other people? No, you don’t. So, please, shut your mouth about him.

I don’t know what happened, but Diana in this story was less irritating than in the first book. She was kind of more mature (like, da, she is 33, it’s about time). Matthew was also more likeable.
In some way, the second book was a bit better than the first. I still won’t give it more than 3 stars, but it is improvement from 2,7 to 3,5.

Will I read the next book? Maybe. I’m not convinced yet.
SpoilerBy the way, what happened with Emily??? I’m so confused. Is she dead? Sarah was crying in the end, but… it was a mistake in my version of book or did Harkness not tell us in purpose, but totally failed in writing it like a cliffhanger?

Way too long. I had to force myself to finish it, at 60% I just wanted it to be over.

Dear Shadow of Night,
I am glad that I am continuing with the series, but you had a lot of the same pacing problems that Discovery of Witches had. You had so much useless traipsing around to different courts and such a massive group of characters that I struggled to stay present in your world. I really wanted to care more about Matthew and Diana and everything they went through in the 1500, but the endless politicking and court visits just pulled me out of the core of their story. I did enjoy the occasional quick peeks into the current day that showed the impact of their presence in the past, and helped remind me of who was wanting for them in the future.
