The weird time setting and anachronisms still mess with me but other than that it's good. That and I keep forgetting that Grace and Connor are 14 but Somper writes like they're older, which is confusing. I think the book wouldve been better if they were 16-17

Grace and Connor have found each other, but Grace is not happy about their situation. She wants to see her brother safe, so when an opportunity to join the pirate academy arises, she takes them, and the twins end up there for a week. Grace is happy that she got her brother away from the front line of El Diablo, but she still misses the Nocturna and wants to go back there, with Darcy, Lorcan and the Captain. Connor loves the academy, but even there he has to take test after test, and when people he thought his friends betray him, he'll need to make a decision.

I love Grace and Connor's story, and I can't wait to unravel all of their secrets.

This was such a shocking book. I found the fights good and the death both shocking and well addressed. I loved the pirate academy yet I fleur line it could have been expanded upon. Yet I loved reading about the time there and how both of the twins had a similar arcs mainly able going where they needed to be.
I loved how Connor was able to grow in this and was able to let his sister go. I also like how his encounter of the Vampirate Captain went. I also love the battle in the end too and how he was about to trust the Captain.
Yet I do find it interesting that both twins seem to have powers and I am curious to see how that develops.

Twins Connor and Grace are on board the Diablo, a pirate ship, where Connor is perfectly content learning on the job, as it were, to be a pirate. But Grace has disturbing dream-visions where she is transported back onto the Vampirate Ship that first rescued her (in the earlier book), and sees a vision of her friend Lorcan in trouble there. When a pirate attack on the Diablo kills Connor's friend, Grace is worried for the safety of her brother, and so she's happy when the two siblings are sent off to Pirate Academy to see if it's to their liking. There is lots of intrigue among the teachers and pirate battle action, swashbuckling goodness with some vampirical stuff too. Rather interesting to think of a school for pirates.

The second book of the series started off a bit slow, and I was worried that it was going to have the slump that sometimes happens after good first books - but around midway point it really started picking up, and I was pulled into the intrigue and politics and whatnot. Also, it was really cool to see the Pirate Academy and how things operate there, as well as meet some new characters I imagine will become important down the line.

On the downside: I was a bit annoyed with Connor's easily shifting loyalties, and he seems very inconstant. Also, Grace's search for a way back onto the Vampirate ship took some melodramatic turns that were a bit annoying.

Overall, though, I like the fact that Grace and Connor have some reality and depth to them, including internal conflicts and, to an extent, being annoying.

And I'm glad that I was totally right about Cheng Li.

'm curious to see how the series will progress, and what the fallout for some of the things that happened in this book will be.

Overall, I very much like the world and the characters, and look forward to picking up the next in the series in short order.
