I really loved the beginning and the parts about her childhood and family. The ending that was all about her crumbling failed marriage was just depressing and felt very one-sided.

I tend to gravitate towards books about food, and even though the food/restaurant industry is dominated by men, I often find myself reading memoirs about the female chefs of the world. Like other female chefs, Gabrielle tells a very unique story, one that I found interesting and rich in details (particularly about the food, of course). Though it's not all food, all the time, the meals she mentioned will make your mouth water! Fabulously well-written. For such a doer, I found the lonely marriage rants to be out of character and a bit of a snooze compared to the rest of the book.

I loved, loved, loved this book! I listened to the audio version and think it especially enhanced the story to hear the author narrate it. I could have listened to double the amount of book, easily! Hard to say all that I loved about it, but I just loved it and would highly recommend it!

As much as I learned about the preparation of food, I recognized, in equal parts, the all too familiar world of restaurant work. But what I loved the most were the moments of clarity I gained about family, marriage and life from Hamilton’s retelling of her own story. Wholly unique and fully enjoyable.

If there is a better memoir written by a chef I have not read it. Gabrielle Hamilton is a very gifted writer and I count myself lucky to have read this extremely well crafted memoir. It's as much about relationships and passions as it is about food and running a highly successful restaurant in New York.

3.75 stars if I could. I loved, loved, loved the first section. I enjoyed most of the second section. But by the third I was irritated and annoyed. Would love to talk about this book with other people, for sure.

Very cute read. Well written but a chef who was going to be a writer partly about why that never happened, thankfully. I'm sure her food is incredible.
