If you had asked me 6 months ago if I would ever read a “romantasy” book I probably would have said no, it’s just not my thing. Well, then my wife convinced me to read Fourth Wing and the sequel and I was hooked. I didn’t expect such great writing. Really, it’s just the fantasy genre I already liked with an added grown up element. I mean who hasn’t wondered about that part of some characters’ lives…fanfic anyone?

Well, now that my mind was open to this genre, I had seen a few pop up on instagram by indie authors that looked intriguing. One of those was Vesselless, and, y’all I might just have a whole new world of literature to enjoy. Cortney does such a great job of building up this world that is part castles, kings, and magical characters and part UFC/WWE, fast cars, and dance clubs, with a lot of mystery, family drama, and high stakes action. The slow burn enemies to lovers relationship between the kick-ass warrior princess (with a heart) Nizzara and half-ghost king trying to reclaim his throne is just icing on the cake.

No spoilers but the ending will have you on the edge of your seat, waiting for the sequel and dying to know know more about everything and everyone in the story.

This book absolutely ᕼᗝᗝᛕᗴᗪ me from the very first page!! It was such an incredibly unique magic system and the world building was SO well written! As someone who devours fantasy, so much of it is so similar and this was just so refreshingly NEW! Nizarra is the current heiress to the throne, and Dagen is the dead former-King. Nizarra is just such a badass who is trying her hardest not to give into her more rage-driven dark impulses while undertaking the high-stakes King’s Duel in order to win her freedom from a forced betrothal. And Dagen is our wickedly handsome half-ghost, half-man deathwalker who makes a deal to steal Nizarra’s soul for his freedom from the god of death, Nil. The tension between Dae and Nizarra was just 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙 😮‍💨 and the political intrigue in the book that always had me wondering who exactly to trust and what their motives were was just 🔥🔥

@cortneylwinn you seriously outdid yourself and I was so grateful to be a part of your secret street team to help get this book out in the world where it belongs!!

This is unlike anything I've read before and it's brilliant. There's a seamless blend of fantasy with modern concepts. There are bonded spirits, a whole world of gods, a unique magic system and a romance that will leave you both sweating and swooning.

Winn does an incredible job weaving in a complex world with multi-dimensional characters. Her FMC, Nizzara, has quickly become one of my all-time favorites. She's the perfect blend of feisty and highly moral, sticking to her principles even if it hurts. I was fully immersed from the first page and couldn't draw myself out until I finished.

Best book of the year, hands down! Get ready for a totally immersive and captivating experience. This book was perfectly written.
From page one, you will be drawn into this incredibly unique world that Winn has created. The world building in this book alone leaves you living vicariously through these characters. Everything is described in such perfect detail that you forget that this place doesn't actually exist.
The amount of depth that went into each character (even side characters) is just astounding. Each unique, with their own struggles and strengths, weaknesses, and worries. You will fall in love with some of them and hate them at the same time. My heart broke for even the most despised of them all. Every character was complex. You can tell Winn thought of everything when designing them.
The romance, oh the romance!! This slow burn kept me invested. I could not put this book down as I read chapter after chapter entirely enthralled by Nizzara and Dae's budding, albeit forbidden relationship. There was steam, banter, angst, lust, compassion, denial, trepidation, and turmoil. They have it all!
The plot is so well thought out that I am just in shock. The politics impacted so much of this story. Rules of the realms imposed upon citizens, slaves, nobility, and royals alike. While reading this, be prepared to throw your hat in with the rebels fighting the kings for the survival of the people. A prophecy from the gods leaves you questioning everything. And once everything comes together, questions you weren't even considering are answered, and you will be left stunned. I find myself wanting to re-read this immediately to see if I can pick up on the hidden narrative.
I know this book has been compared to A Court of Thorns and Roses, but the honest truth is that Vesselless far exceeds that comparison. It has far more complexities and is more maturley written. This will soon become your new favorite series.
Bravo Cortney Winn, this book will forever be the golden light with which nothing can compare.
