A wonderful story recommended by a music student of mine. A great reminder to know thyself.

This book made me feel so fuzzy after finishing it. I related to Elise so much, she was an outcast all throughout school and was bullied for not fitting into the societal mold that her peers did. She has a hard time letting her light shine and her classmates try and repeatedly succeed in diminishing her light.
She tries to kill herself then backs out and the aftermath is where we start back up again. Elise wanders the streets after her family is asleep, and makes friends with 2 random girls and it changes her life. She befriends the DJ in a underground dance club and learns how to be a DJ, she learns how to be strong and learns to be happy with herself.

I honestly want to reread it immediately.

Often implausible yet such a fun read. (How did the author turn sad and serious conflicts into such an amusement park of a book?) Maybe I just feel cool for knowing the bands and songs mentioned throughout. Maybe I just happen to get how a misfit can also be haughty, how an outcast can turn that status into an asset, how the peer group you imprint with will never see you any other way, and how the brutal interactions among kids and teens are often invisible to adults.

Elise has always failed at everything she tries, and now she's even failed at killing herself. In the aftermath, she takes to wandering the neighborhood at night and discovers an underground club, with friendly regulars who welcome her in no questions asked. Drawn in by the charismatic DJ, Char, she falls in love not with him, but with the music. This is a real, solid story of a girl coming into her own. Good stuff.

I'm thinking actual rating is more like 3,5 stars.
It was a quick read but I don't know, it just didnt capture me like I was expecting. I had sort of high expectations and I was a bit let down.. I can't pinpoint it anymore. I think I was just bookhungover after Wonder which was amazing.

I loved this book! Elise struggles with depression, but she finds her place in a rocking underground dance club. It makes me wish I liked clubbing more, but I don't...

I hope Elise stops being insufferable soon. I mean, I get that navigating high school is hard, but I just can't with people who throw pity parties for themselves because they don't have the backbone to stand up for themselves. SNAP OUT OF IT.
