The premise of the book is very interesting and the beginning is quite captivating.
The murder of a man that everyone liked and appreciated profoundly. But then a second murder is committed and this one is even more baffling than the first one. And so the investigation takes off.

I loved the murder mystery and the guessing game, trying to figure out who the killer is. Ann Cleeves does a brilliant job of hiding its identity pretty well and the final unfolds as a complete surprise.

On the other hand, the book is very focused on character development and there is a deep dive in their personal life. I would say a tad too much for my liking as I didn't really connect with the characters and their personal lives were analyzed in a lot of depth. At times, it felt like the focus was much more oriented on then than the investigation.

All in all a good book and, as always, a pleasure to read one of Ann Cleeves' beautiful creations.

My thanks and gratitude to MacMillian Audio and NetGalley for giving me the chance to read this ARC.

Not as good as the first in the series, but still enjoyable.

A great "whodunnit" from one on Britain's most excellent mystery writers.  A little worried at one point that all the suspects were going to get killed off.  Excellent resolution at the end and a page turner all the way.  The culprit....did not see it coming.  Satisfying read.  Will continue the series.

After I finished reading the first in this series – The Long Call – I discovered it had been made into a TV serial. After finishing this, the second in the series, I read that the TV company have decided not to make a second season. I think I can see why: The Heron’s Cry is just not as good as The Long Call.

An unfortunate blend of the uninteresting [ Patients Together] and the unbelievable [ DS Jen Rafferty (working class leftie) and her previously unmentioned bff (posh, magistrate) for starters], the plot even managed to shrink the online world from global and distant to little and local.

It’s not the worst detective book I’ve ever read – I did keep on reading, after all, but I broke my own rule – don’t read series – and I got what I deserved.

This book handles a lot of sensitive topics - ymmv with how successfully it's pulled off. I am really getting into her slow, cerebral writing, which feels amplified in this series. The characters are growing on me. These are all a bit darker.

The book drags on and on, it’s far too long. There’s too many characters, keeping track of everybody becomes confusing. There’s also a bunch of sub plots of all of the detectives’ relationships which you might mix up as well. Although they are kind of resolved at the end I wonder why all the details were added in the first place
