It was definitely a slow burn, it took a great while to get there, but I really really enjoyed seeing these characters develop. I had issue with small bits and pieces, but that was personal preference more than anything. My main issue was Kat tearing down the coverings in the first few hours of living in his house. I liked that she was opening him up and he dealt with his grief but I do think she was a little fast and ended up throwing it all in his face at once. I hated that she kept saying she understood he loved his wife and was grieving her, but at the same time got annoyed that he did. I understand why she left, that conversation was not nice, and I’m actually glad they had time apart. I liked the introduction of Harry, and I’m very eager to read his book.

I wouldn’t say I loved this book. In the beginning I wasn’t completely convinced, but over time I really just enjoyed the story.

I love stories with a strong female lead. Jasper was so broken and riddled with guit thinking he killed his wife because she died in childbirth. It took a strong woman to heal him and help him learn that he can love again. This book had a Beauty and the Beast feel! I loved it!

Quick easy read. Good story. The male lead character was an ass.

"Life is horrible and unfair and terrifying. But those are not reasons to stop living."

Jasper saving Katherine's life and their subsequent correspondence via letters was a promising start.

However, the story quickly became less about them getting to know each other and more about them repeating the same thought patterns of "his first wife was perfect, he will never be able to love me" and "I killed my wife, I deserve to be miserable".

I found myself waiting for the added drama to drive their communication forward, as is often the case in romance. The story jumped four months ahead and the resolution therefore seemed rushed.

This book lands between two and three stars. I'm bumping it down due to the frequent weird usage of comma - it was recurringly added where it was not needed, for example on page 284: "Katherine’s hair hung in damp, strands about her waist and shoulders..." The book was otherwise well written, which makes these errors stand out.

What's charming about this book is how Jasper and Katherine just can't help being attracted to one another--not just physically, but to their shared reading tastes, their love of the country, and their innately appealing natures. I loved seeing them progress to their HEA, but I have to admit I wanted to bash Jasper over the head for most of the book.

Katherine was a great character, honest about herself (to the point of not seeing her own appeal to others) and able to make decisions when confronted with situations that needed to be addressed. At several points in For Love of the Duke, Katherine is the one to take action, to take charge of her life and move it in directions that she needs. I loved see her act rather than react.

I found Jasper's struggle over his wife and child to be a great one, but I would have liked to have seen a ready heir at least acknowledged. The fact is, death in childbirth was the #1 killer of women at this time, and many children didn't live through their first year. So having Jasper react in what to me seemed to be far more apropos of today's times without any acknowledgment of an existing heir was odd.

I read a paperback copy of this book that I picked up years ago at an RWA signing. I hope Caldwell has had the book edited since then, as there were a number of grammatical errors, especially misplaced commas, that were jarring as I read the story.

But overall, I had a wonderful time reading Katherine and Jasper's journey to love. Frankly put, Jasper lucked out, as Katherine is a wonderful heroine.
