Beginning in 1821, the book traces the girls who become women with the power to do witchcraft, who have daughters very different from themselves who become women who come into their power and have daughters....
In 1821, Ursule, the powerful matriarch of a Romani family must protect her extended family from the witch hunters who pursue them in northern France. Each generation after fears losing the line of power, or of still being pursued. It seems there's never really a good time to be a witch.
The final woman featured was the most interesting to me, and the story is left open ended in a satisfying way.
I was most disappointed in the lack of trust between people. Mothers and daughters after Ursule had such different personalities and desires that they could never really work together. Their communication was always stilted, with too much unsaid. In those 6 generations, only two men were trusted with the information of who they really were, and only one of them can handle it. Some of this works in the story, but I think that some of it was a weakness in the writing.

I liked this book a lot. Not sure what else to say since it’s been awhile since I finished. I just forgot to check in

The writing of this book was just stunning and each of the characters were incredible in their own way and fairly well rounded in my opinion to show the differing of how each generation impacted the next. I would say the final two ‘books’ were my ‘favourites’ simply because they were the longest lasting and so I felt more connected to the characters and they were just, to me, the most likeable generations within this novel.

The only reason my rating is as low as it is is due to the fact that, for the most part, I felt I wasn’t able to connect very well with the main characters before their storyline was over and we moved to the next generation. I suppose I understand why it’s written that way it’s just that personally as a reader I prefer to get super connected to characters and really get to know them which I felt I was unable to do with the majority of these women.

Nonetheless I did really like this book and found the writing style beautiful with wonderful yet flawed characters, showing the power of women in times where society was unaccepting of that whilst also showing the pull and desire surrounding the craft and magic and how using it can affect a person in so many ways.

It took me longer than normal for me to finish this book. It was a good book. A good story that I wanted to read. I wanted to see each generation through their story. I wanted to know what happened. I don’t know why exactly I would put it down and not pick it back up right away. It was almost like it was if it was spoken it was monotone. It doesn’t mean that a monotone voice isn’t carrying good words. The book was like that. Good words, just not delivered in a way that was making me want to keep up late at night reading it. A good book so giving it 4 stars.

Polecam. Jeśli ktoś lubi takie historie nie poczuje się zawiedziony.
