Maid-sama! Vol. 01
by Hiro Fujiwara
3/5 stars

Maid-sama is one of the most well-known shoujo of all time. Well, after reading the book, I can see why everyone wants to read it.

Misaki is the strict class president at Seika High School. She's always tough because she's the first female press at that once-all-boys school.

Actually, Misaki has her own secret that she would like to keep from everyone in her school. She works as a maid in a cafe. When Usui, the popular boy at school, happened to run into Misaki at work, things got a little bit risky for Misaki. So this is where their story begins.

Misaki is a strong girl who tried her hardest to stand on her own two feet. But, in my opinion, she needs to understand that good leadership entails properly dividing roles among her team members.

Then there's Usui, who is your typical manga-cool boy. He excels at everything, is a little cold, but has a soft heart.

The story, in my opinion, is quite full. This manga, like Detective Conan, is jam-packed with dialogue. Some people may become bored while reading. As for me, I'm fine with it.

Because this is a shoujo manga, I believe Misaki and Usui's relationship will become sweeter later. So, let's see what happens next with their story.

Anyway, for the extra story, "A Transparent World" is so sweet. I like how Makoto can help Kisaragi to be a better version of herself.

Misaki Ayuzawa is class president on the Seika High School Student Council — an accomplishment that is no small feat!

Formerly an all boys school, Seika is known for being a bit of a rowdy place. Having a female class president is proving quite a challenge for all.

Misaki is no softie.

She makes sure girls are treated equally and definitely goes after any boy who wants to be a problem. That said, Misaki can be a bit rigid and inflexible which also causes friction when the boys don’t feel like their concerns are being fully considered.

To be honest, Misaki isn’t a big fan of men — which may be causing a bias.

Her father walked out on the family and left them with a huge debt — which is why Misaki has found herself as Seika in the first place. It has lower tuition.

Still, Misaki has to pick up an after school job.

Which is kind of her biggest secret.

Misaki works at a maid cafe!

Though she hates men, she finds herself serving them more often than not in her free time.

When classmate and Seika’s handsome heartthrob Takumi Usui discovers her secret, will she be able to trust him to keep it?

Or, will her image as a strong, smart, and independent young woman be ruined?

More, what motive could Usui possibly have for wanting to help preserve Misaki’s reputation….?

This is such a fun manga! I reapply appreciate not only the premise but the characters as well. I think the characters in this story generate a lot of interesting discussion about gender, sexism, and expectations without belaboring any points.

I highly recommend this one, especially for those who enjoy a cute romance series with some thoughtful reflections through! I’m definitely looking forward to returning to this story~

The ending got me fan-girling! Definitely worth reading.
I’m actually reading the 2 in 1 of this series, but Goodreads only shows the individual volumes so right now I’m reading volume 2.

It’s so fast paced to the point it’s a bit rushed, like 4 major things will happen in the same chapter. I would give it 5 stars, but it’s mostly just how some events are pretty forgettable, cliché characters, and the art is good, don’t get me wrong, but nothing special. I do although like the chemistry between Misaki and Usui which kept me hooked. I didn’t read the first bonus story, since I feel like it was just added to make the volume longer (which it was), although I did read the bonus story where it showed Misaki getting the job at the maid café which was good.
