I absolutely agree with someone else's review that this is a book about race, not a book about immigration.

There were a few stories that gave me new information and showed me a different experience to the ones usually represented already in the media/blogs/books on race, but they were few and far between.

But this wasn't what I was looking for. This should have been a book about immigrants and of these there are so many different nationalities, etc who also experience a very different life to the regular local - that would have been something I would have loved to read.

This is a hard book to judge - some essays were life changing and some were just okay - but overall I’d recommend this to a friend

Wow. I was just blown away by how relatable every single one of these stories was. I laughed, cried and seethed along with the authors at their experiences of racism and the whole experience of being a (second generation) immigrant in a white country. While reading I remembered all these little pockets of experiences and thoughts I had while growing up in the Netherlands as a brown person that I had put away in my head somewhere because I felt so lonely in having them. This book made me feel like I am not alone in a way nothing else ever has.

Would recommend listening to this as an audiobook. Each essay is a nice, digestible length, and it was neat to be able to hear the voices behind the words. I found that the stories themselves often had confronting (but necessary) truths and on the whole, the collection made me realise how homogeneous my reading experience usually is. Refreshing to hear some different voices!

I really loved all the essays in this collection. Many of the essays were written by people I already adored so it was nice to read them but also get to read other awesome creative poc stories. I thought the essays were very relatable, interesting, informative and although some stories made me sad/angry/disappointed in the world others were funny and lovely to read. I loved this collection and it was so nice to get to read so many essays by awesome people. Rarely does poc actually get space to create stuff like this and now I crave more.
