Wonderful book! Strong characters--very moving. I can sense the fear, the uncertainty, the passion, etc. It was well done!

I was skeptical of this book to begin with, but after finishing it, it earned a solid 4.5!

I enjoy reading historical romance novels for a little pick-me-up, but as a history nerd, I love reading books where I learn little things along the way. Miller packs tidbits of information about shanty life into a gorgeous romance, driven by convincing characters. As a Canadian, I also enjoyed characters like Henri and Moon Song who spoke Canadien :)

Great read!

I loved this book. Katie was so strong and courageous as she fled her cruel husband. Not afraid of hard work, Katie signed up to work as a cook at a lumber mill. Adventures are varied. Learning to get up at 2am to begin cooking breakfast is difficult. Not everyone treats Katie with respect. When a young Native woman, Moonsong, arrives at camp severely malnourished and with an infant, Katie takes care of both.
The "shanty boys" are interesting characters (as they must have been in real life). They work hard and enjoy Katie's cooking. This book does a good job of describing the dangers of the lumber trade. Many men perished in the woods of Minnesota harvesting the wood that would rebuild a nation after civil war.
I am looking forward to Moonsong's book. In the meantime, I would recommend reading books by Serena Miller!

Great read

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. Katie, Ned, and Robert definitely deserved each other, and the theme of love, hope, forgiveness, trust were sweetly portrayed in the story.

This book was entertaining, fast paced, and spiritually uplifting, and yet ultimately forgettable. It left me not really wanting to continuing with the series.

I admired Katie's spirit in getting away from her abuser and her willingness to find love again in Robert. Robert was a good hero, a bit tortured, but ultimately a decent man. I enjoyed the descriptions of the setting, as it made it very easy to visualize!

Thing of it is, I can't really put my finger on what was wrong with the book to make me not want to keep going with the series. I guess I just wasn't impressed with it enough to want to continue.

Loved this book ... It's always fun to read a story set in one's home state and in an area one is familiar with. I actually read most of it while camping at Hartwick Pines State Park ... I will definitely be looking for more books by this author.

Michigan - Katie and her little brother escape her violent husband. Lumbar camp owner Robert hires Katie as a cook. Great characters and storyline.

This book was presented as a love story, but it is truly a look at the life of Michigan loggers in the late 19th century. I found the setting so interesting, I forgot to look for the romance part of it. I also loved the characters; even the ancillary characters had such a presence and distinctiveness to them. In the end, it was a very sweet love story.

I enjoyed the book it’s the first I’ve read by Serena Miller. The Measure of Katie Calloway is about a part of history that I wasn’t really familiar with. I enjoyed learning about logging camps. I am looking forward to her next book. The next book has different main characters but you get to find out what happened to Katie and Robert.
