The Lonely Hearts Hotel by Heather O'Neill

I absolutely LOVED reading this book. It’s beautiful, gritty, heartbreaking, and hopeful. What I loved most is how HUMAN the characters are; they are deeply flawed, complex, and extremely well written. Everyone you meet is imperfect and that is what makes them interesting!
I didn’t know what to expect when I first started reading this, but by chapter 3 I had already fallen in love with Rose and Pierrot and was excited to see the rise and fall of their lives. The first few chapters are a little rough but vital to understanding the thought processes/behaviors of Rose and Pierrot as you follow them into adulthood.
I had a difficult time finishing this book only because I couldn’t stand the idea of saying goodbye to such amazing characters. I’d recommend this book to people that enjoy love stories, tragedies, and problematic characters.

I know there are a lot of mixed reviews on this book, but I enjoyed it! I expected to see the rise and fall of President Snow, but there are no time jumps so you follow Snow in “real time” which leads me to believe there will be a book (or books) after this one where we’ll get a more in depth understanding of who Snow is and how he came to presidency.
There were times I had to remind myself that this prequel is not about The Games itself, but about Snow and his experience with it. The scenes inside the arena are not nearly as descriptive or exciting as the first book in the trilogy, but I did like comparing the differences and seeing how far The Games have come.
I do hope there is at least one sequel because I’m very eager to see Snow’s journey and character development.

This is the third book I’ve read by him and while it isn’t my favorite, I still had a great time reading it! The women are written really well and each have their own distinct personalities, the plot is exciting, the pacing is quick but easy to keep up with, and James Harris is so fun to hate.
This book isn’t as gory as his others but it still has his unique touch that makes your heart beat out of your chest and makes you squirm in your seat, even when you’re reading while it’s still light out.

I marked this as 4 stars, but it’s really low on my 4-star scale. When I first started reading this I loved it - everything was new and exciting and invigorating, but after awhile it became boring and repetitive. I once thought Vivian’s “sexcapades” were scandalous in the best way, but after constantly reading about man after man, I got bored. It seemed like having sex became her ENTIRE personality when she’s so much more than that. At one point, I forgot that the book was actually a letter meant to reveal Vivian’s relationship with the recipient’s father (who remains a mystery until much later in the book.) While there were parts that I absolutely loved, there were parts I wish had been sped up or just left out entirely. I loved diving into the theatre scene and I loved reading about Vivian’s life post-theatre, but I do wish we saw her interact more with her found family and with Angela’s father.
