So I first read this in the midst of my Goth phase when I was 14 years old.

Overall, I found this to be a funny parody - if it was even meant as such.

The whole book is incredibly shallow with a Freaky Friday vibe. Characters are written badly, and the romance was like a cardboard cut-out. You could replace it's development with any couple from a book in the romance aisle and it would still function in the same way.

I'm convinced that this author had 1) never actually talked to anyone belonging to the Goth subculture, and 2) never spent any time around real life teenagers.

I really only recommend it as a book to laugh at, at best.

Preachy story, one dimensional characters and a complete waste of time.

This was a fun, fluffy read. Typical YA with high school struggles and relationships. It was a fun twist on the Freaky Friday concept and the characters grow and realize more about how their actions (or inactions) impacted all their relationships. Cute with a happy ending.

My rating system:
5 ⭐ = Great story, loved it, would definitely recommend
4 ⭐ = Good story, enjoyed it, worth the read
3 ⭐ = Okay story, some predictable parts, it was fine
2 ⭐ = Lame story, boring, kept losing interest
1 ⭐ = Terrible story, couldn't finish

Okay, so I think this is a pretty underrated contemporary book. It has a lot of good humor and an underlying message that I think is really important. The writing is juvenile at times and there isn't a huge amount of depth in any of the characters. But it's not horrible. Overall, I would recommend it to someone I know.

Oh My Goth by Gena Showalter was a fantastic book, in my opinion. It features protagonist Jade Leigh, who considers herself to be different and a "nonconformist who values individuality", Mercedes who is considered to be this perfect Barbie doll, and Clarik, who only appears after both Jade and Mercedes are placed in an alternate universe by their principal after having a fight.
In this alternate world, Jade is popular for her outfit choices, and everybody at their school dresses the same way. Mercedes, who used to be loved for what she wore, is now on the outer, trying to find her place.
What I loved was how much Jade grew as a character throughout this novel. She believes she's different from Mercedes, that she has a better heart and doesn't judge anyone, but by the end of the book she realises that not only the other students, but herself as well are extremely judgmental towards one another.
Showalter shows great character definition, and I loved reading Jade's fall from grace, as she descends into the pit of popularity and allows it to take over.
If I were someone considering whether or not to read this book, all the advice I have would be 'go for it'. You might get a nice surprise like I did!

Thank you to Edelweiss and Harlequin Teen for the free ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book had all kinds of hidden message the hope for unity, love, and peace between diffrent clicks in society.
We should all learn something from this. We are all different and should be treated like humans. You don’t know what people are dealing with and we should treat each other how we want to be treated.

This book plays into any teenagers nightmares/dreams. It is a great "What would happen if..." alternate reality story which dragged me in. I read this in record time.

Jade, a non-conformist punk Goth chick, gets into trouble for the last time. Taken on a "field trip" to a secret lab, where she's strapped down a sedated, Jade wakes up in an alternate reality in which roles are reversed and Jade has gone from the bottom to the tip-top of the social ladder. To get back to reality, Jade is going to have to work with her arch-enemy, "Barbie" girl Mercedes.
I thought that this story, while a bit predictable, was cute and entertaining. Just FYI, there is a bit of language, some making out, and some teens drinking alcohol. That aside, the message was good and the characters learned valuable lessons about acceptance and love.
