So... I don't actually like horror stories. I mean, I shelve this series as urban fantasy, (though I should probably create something like a historical paranormal shelf) but sometimes I think the horror genre fits the series much better. I specifically thought that whilst reading this book as it felt the most horror to me to date.
But, you know what, this book was such fun.
There's the infiltration of the Endicott's creepy castle-esque stronghold where, naturally, everything is not as it seems. There are a couple of plots that get their well deserved end (if you've read it, you know what - or, rather, who - I mean) and a couple of plots (including the main one of visiting where Whyborne's ancestors come from) that have been a long time coming.
All in all, I stayed up much later than I should have to finish it. Which, really, you would think I'd have learned by now that, once I hit the half way - or, possibly, the two-thirds mark, I don't want to put these books down for anything. The only good news was that the next day was not a work day.

I'm both excited and sad that this series is coming towards its' end. I love everything about this series. Whybourne and Griffin are two of my favorite characters. I've enjoyed watching Ival grow into himself and become confident in who he is. This story feels like it's been a long time coming. Ival was always going to have to come to some sort of understanding with his Endicott cousins, but this wasn't at all what I was expecting.
I really liked Heliabel in this story as well. It's good to see her getting to play a part in her son's life now that she's made her transformation. Of of Whybourne and Griffin's sidekicks always make me smile. They have such a supportive group of friends. Christine is such a powerhouse of a woman and Iskander is a great support for her. I love Christine with her spear in this book. So much fun.
The elements leading to the masters return feel like they're spinning tighter around Ival. He's changing things and gathering a force that hopefully can stand against them.

Honestly, I dont even know what to write in these reviews after 10 books of consistent plot and romance? So heres my bullet review:
* Somehow, the quality still keeps getting better, this one is probably my favourite of the second half, and thats saying something
* Christine is still the love of my life and Im absolutely delighted with certain developments and am excited to see what happens next ;)
* Jordan did the impossible: they managed to make me cry over fucking Stanford
* Heliabel was absolutely incredible in here, and also made me cry
* Jordan also did the other impossible: they introduced a completely new character and had me cry over them in under two pages
* There was a lot of crying is what Im trying to say
* Whyborne is such a little technology gremlin, I adore him
* I love Rufus and Hattie Endicott and want them to be members of the main team
* That big fight tho, noice
* Seriously, I cried over Stanford, of all people
* That scene near the start with Persophone and Whyborne "playing around" with Whyborne whining to his father about Persephone being a giant meanie had me in stitches
* I love Niles Whyborne and if he dies in the final book, I will lose all my shit
* Which reminds me, what do you mean this is the penultimate book, Whyborne is not allowed to end
* Ever
* Never ever
* I know Im missing something but this book was so good it blew my mind
* I DONT WANT THE SERIES TO BE OVER YET COME ON

This series keeps evolving in the best way possible. Whyborne and Griffin's love for each other is stronger than ever - strong enough to stand firmly without being an essential part of the plot, leaving more room for suspense, horror and action, which I love so much in Hawk's writing. Don't get me wrong, Hawk writes the best romance, but at this point I just wanted a different kind of action - and that's exactly what we got (plus some spice in the start for the romance fans). Friendship and family is also something the author writes masterfully.
The fast pace made me want to read the entire book in one sitting, and I definitely would if I had the time. I'm sad that I only have one book left of my favorite series ever, though.

What an awesome read! I so love the characters and Christine and Whyborne were hilarious at times. The storyline was fantastic and I love the author’s ability to weave a tale. But, this is the second last in the series. While I’m eager for the next book, I’m not eager for the end of the series.

It’s a fortress by the sea in Cornwall. And Nyarlahotep is associated with an ancient Outside force. Humans call it the god of chaos. And also, the Masters still haven’t arrived yet, because of dimensional barriers
This series has changed since the first few novels, which had the plot of: “Look, we’re in a Weird town. Gnarly murders have been committed by human-monster hybrids, and we’re going to stop them.”
Instead, these last books in the series are telling us “NOW WE NEED TO SAVE THE ENTIRE WORLD”
However, (As usual), evil human cults cause problems that bring the alien outsider “Masters” closer than ever. If you join said cult, your orifices will sprout tentacles. What an amazing incentive, let me tell you

I am torn between racing straight to Deosil and never reading it because that way I won't be finished with Griffin and Ival.

Simply marvelous
A delightful continuation of a favorite series, with more depth and detail added to Hawk's version of the Mythos. Very recommended.
