No real new information is provided, but it was helpful to have a refresher. Especially with the Biblical perspective.

I expected references to other works, but honestly it felt like he just pieced together everyone else’s work and decided to call it his own. What sections he did write about seemed very cliche. I wanted to like this book and be informed on the psychological and scientific aspects of self-control but was very disappointed.

The positive is that the many references he made gives me a starting point to read original works and studies on self-control if I wanted.

Book #5 for 2020: Your Future Self Will Thank You

If I wasn’t working towards a goal, I’d immediately reread this book. On my quest to become Christlike, I’ve been studying how to make real and permanent changes in my life. On this journey I’ve read a lot about emotional Intelligence, mindfulness meditation and awareness from a scientific perspective, but mostly from the beliefs and practices of Buddhism.

And I’ve learned a lot of very helpful practices that has absolutely nothing to do with religion or spirituality.

So to read a book that wisely combines the knowledge of Scripture with the knowledge of psychology, that also provides God glorifying tools to help develop self-control and deep spiritual transformation, it was exactly what I needed for my journey.

If you are looking to develop greater self-control in your life, if you are sick and tired of shallow superficial change, this book presents the secrets to self-control from the Bible and science and I give it my highest recommendation.

Inspiring, practical, and theologically sound. As a serial procrastinator and a person prone to laziness, I needed the reminders, encouragement, and truth in this book. Drew is a funny, relatable writer and he intelligently connects both psychology and theology to human behavior. This was the perfect read before tackling New Year’s resolutions!

I’ve been doing some studying on self control lately and this was an excellent read. Convicting and challenging. Also very interesting learning about how the brain works.

Well researched, and well written. That's what makes this book stand out from others I've read. Throughout it's practical and honest. I really enjoyed and profited from it

a short, but well-thought-out and well-written, book on Self-control. Drew does an excellent job mixing Christian truths with data from lots of recent research. I thoroughly enjoyed the content and his writing style and would recommend it to anyone looking to learn more about the "how" and "why" of Self-Discipline and Self-Control.
