Started out slow but it turned out ready well. A lot of intrigue and a plot twist I should have seen coming but didn't want to.

A Re-read?? YES!

This is one of those books that either hooks you or you toss it back into the water. I was hooked. I reread this because I finally got the next two on paperback. I really like the depth at which this is written. That's what really grabbed my interest. It's more than some basic plot. More than an impossible romance. It's loss. It's war. It's revolution. It's how people are changed by such traumatic events and how they'll never be the same.

Mare Barrow will never be the same. Her life changed instantly. With how fast this book moves, it felt like I was stuck in slow motion as everything happened. I was still SHOOK by the ending. It was horrifying and I know it won't get easier in the coming books.

All of these abilities and the distrust; it really gets to me. A really good book.

The romance is definitely a subplot in this one I feel like it focuses more on the action. I will say that it’s very political fantasy/dystopian based. With the fantasy/dystopian genre it’s almost always the same plot which is the “chosen one” being thrown into being the face of a rebellion or just joining one against the rulers of their books.

It’s always interesting to see how each author makes it their own. I will say I kind of lost interest 60% in which sucks cuz I was almost there and that’s the pattern I found with this book I was bored then hooked throughout the whole thing I’m glad it picked up towards the end with the betrayal and all that. I feel like Maven and Mare have more chemistry than she ever did with Cal ?? And I know Mav betrayed her but I love a villain arc. I know that she’s probably going to end up with Cal

Red Queen was Game of Thrones, meets Divergent, meets The Hunger Games all rolled up into one for me. I loved the take on royals with super powers.

The book is told from Mare Barrows point of view, she is a red who in a world of elite silvers is considered lowly and only there to serve the silvers. She is thief, not by choice, but by necessity. She is trying to keep from being conscripted. In something that can only be described as fate she ends up with a job at the palace. It's where she learns that she too has powers, it's also where the king, queen, and the princes learn of them as well. To keep this from the silvers, and the reds, she is betrothed to one of the princes and lies are told to keep anyone from finding out.

Meanwhile a rebellion is brewing and Mare is in the middle of both of them.

I kind figured out the twist, and was expecting it, but it still hurt none the less.

This is book one in what is expected to be a trilogy and does end on a semi cliff hanger. This is one book I would love to see made into a movie. I hope my daughter enjoys it as much as I did.

A bit angst-y and feels a bit unoriginal in plot. Nonetheless, it is enjoyable.

meh, it was a run of the mill dystopian "chosen one" story. It was fine.

3.75/5 -- rounding down to 3. I just liked it.

The story was fun but (extremely) derivative. Didn't love the romance(s), didn't love the worldbuilding, didn't love the characterization, didn't love the main character. It was more than okay because it was a pretty fast read but it'd be a stretch to say I really liked it.

Intriguing and kept me guessing. Made me care about a character I figured out I shouldn't. And the epilogue? Yeah, saw that coming. I squeaked.

Can't wait to see how this turns out.
