How can I explain the effect this novel had on me?

Sarah Dessen is, and always will be, a poignant, lyrical writer that touches the heart of matters that teens struggling with, without being condescending.

This novel focuses on Remy, a girl abandoned by her father at a young age, who later dies after one last cop out, a song dedicated to letting her down. Her mother frequently remarries, creating a distrust of all men.

After her mothers most recent marriage, she finds herself drawn to a boy who does not fit in with any of her preconceived notions of the perfect boyfriend. This is the closest Remy has been to love, and as she grapples with letting go of her vulnerability, the world around her rapidly shifts.

Plot: 0
It was terrible. Ugh. And the romance was really bad.
Characters: 0
The only sort of okay character was Dexter, and he still wasn't good. I HATED Remy. Ugggggghh.
Description: 1
Good enough.
Style: 0
I hated reading from Remy. And it didn't need to be split into months it was lame.
Symbolism: 0
Did Sarah even try? The whole "love is real" theme didn't work for me.
TOTAL: 1
This may be the worst book I've ever read. At least [b:Thirteen Reasons Why|1217100|Thirteen Reasons Why|Jay Asher|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1333822506s/1217100.jpg|2588213] tried. I wanted to like the book. The first couple chapters I did. Then I felt like Remy was a character I could no longer like. Too dysfunctional of a character for me to support because I never felt like she took responsibility for her actions. I did not like this story. These earlier books by Sarah Dessen have been attempts at dysfunction, depression, but somehow boring too at the same time. Unlikable characters and hard to push through.

This does not mean I will stop reading Dessen. It will be on to the next one.

This book has solidified for me that I truly like Sarah Dessen. She honestly is just a great author. Her characters are kind of the same from book to book and she uses similar tropes, but whatever it is I never fail to enjoy it. This one wasn't my favorite Sarah Dessen read because the third-act breakup really seemed to drag on. I honestly don't mind a third-act breakup and I feel like that's not a spoiler because they seem to exist in every Sarah Dessen book, but in this one in particular I was over it. I either needed the relationship to go deeper or the breakup to be shorter. I felt like we almost got to the peak of the romance, but never fully made it even at the end of the book. Which for me was quite disappointing as I felt like the romantic relationship was one of her best ones yet. But honestly, besides that, it was a great read. I loved the setting, even though it wasn't at the beach or lake like it is typically and the characters were fun. Especially the main characters. This book put a smile on my face the whole time, which is what I ultimately want in a book like this.

In this emotional roller coaster of a novel, Dessen has the reader shadowing Remy who thinks she has relationships all figured out and that love is a sham. I found myself reading as much as could each time I sat with this book, enjoying how you're almost forced to grow with Remy as you read through the story and about her struggles in finding what love might be. This is my first time exploring the Teen Romance genre, but if there are more authors similar to Dessen within it I will continue my exploration. This is a great story to give to any teen that is eager to explore more into relationships and love.

In this lil Dessen book, serial-dater Remy meets Dexter and everything changes, obviously hahahaha. Such a sweet book worth the cutest meet-cute. I’m so glad her mom ended up with a happy divorce and that Remy found her own belief in love. I love the positive friendships throughout and loved Dexter and his bandmate’s interactions. I also loved Dexter’s personality and pure kindness. I wish we could’ve seen more detailed scenes with Dexter and Remy, so there would be even more of a look into their relationship, but for the length i thought it was well-written and paced. Love dessen and loved this sort of older young-adult book! :)

The book was really good. I loved the entire book and I was pulled into it from the very begining. I dont know many kids who actually do drugs or smoke or drink, but in this book they all pretty much do so that made it harder for me to try to relate to the book. I enjoyed this book and would deffinetly read it again in the future.
