♊️ The Zodiac Academy ♊️

‼️SPOILERS BELOW‼️

✨3/5✨

This book...yeah. Not great. It's not the worst I ever read (I'm looking at Gild), but it's definitely not the best.

The romance, if that's what you want to call it, is so hot and cold. The characters supposedly hate each other but one of the MC's is always talking about how attractive they are. Especially when they're TRYING TO KILL THEM AND HUMILIATE THEM. Like sweetie, get your head checked. The only love I was interested was anything with Orion. Literally the only character that kinda made sense.

Darcy and Tory are cool, but they're also super annoying. They just accept that they're being bullied and "can't do anything about it," but also don't try to do anything about it. They made me so angry because they could've been awesome. And they did shine in the few moments they stood up to the Heirs.

The Heirs...why? Their ideology makes absolutely no sense for why they attack the twins. And the half assed reasons are poor writing. Conflicted guys with dark past who abuses women because they think the twins want the throne they stated several times they don't want???? Make it make sense.

This book is average. Not the worst but not the best. I am on book 2 which is EONS better than one so far, which is promising. I only started book 2 in the hopes it had an actual plot and I'm happy to report it does...kinda. But hey...it's better than book 1's edgy no plot.

0.5 star
(goodreads i'm begging you to introduce a half-point based rating system because shit like this deserves less than 1 star)

what the actual fuck? i guess congratulations to caroline peckham are in order, because 'the awakening' is officially, the worst book i've ever read in my life.

i'm not disappointed in the author for writing such a shitty book- one with missing punctuations, glaring mistakes and plot holes the size of Jupiter, because i've been let down too many times to get my hopes up in the first place.

i have never seen a book so degrading towards the main leads; they are constantly abused- emotionally, mentally and physically. it got off-putting to read after a point because they never used their powers to stand up for themselves. it would've been okay if they'd stood up for themselves atleast once.

every character in this book is stupid. the girls are straight up bimbos who will lust for any muscular asshole within their eyesight. NONE of the girls have any self-respect, which was honestly humiliating for me to read. they are willing to bring other women down just to get the attention of stupid men with fragile egos like the Heirs.

coming to the Heirs, what the fuck was so special about them? they have nothing going for them aside from being ripped. i felt no attraction to any of them- looking like mini hulk is doing nothing for me. you've got to have some personality as a bare minimum.

*screams with frustration*

nah, i'm out. definitely not reading this series any further.
on second thoughts, i think i'll give the second book a try because the characters may be shit but the setting is...kinda cool. plus i need some fights and gore.

I have feelings about this book, mostly bad but somehow not entirely. I honestly don't even know where to start, so I guess I'll just list it to make it easier for myself:

-I couldn't tell Darcy and Tory apart. I still don't know who is who anymore so I just kind of read and hope for the best since they're both flat, and overly similar. Twins are usually not identical in personality, and also not this boring surely.

-The writing. It felt like something I'd write in high school. Some sentences were awkward and simply put, I just wasn't impressed by it. I'm shocked this book has such a high rating from the writing alone.

-The Heirs. Ugh where do I even start. I don't know who I should hate the most honestly. I suppose I'd say Caleb considering he enjoys doing things when consent is taken away. Here's an example of a line he said **Spoilers from quote below of what type of Fae Caleb is**

“Fine. Bite me then if you have to,” I said, holding out my wrist with the faint idea that he might take it rather than biting my neck again.
“It’s not as much fun if you just accept it willingly,” Caleb complained.

I'm not sure why this is meant to be hot, but it's not. The twins pretty much begin to accept being assaulted constantly, the lack of consent is gross, and I have no idea how I'm supposed to not hate these guys. Seth is a close second to my level of hate. Third is Darius; he seems hottest to me but I still don't like him considering he's still an ass. Lastly Max, since he barely had any time in this book which confuses me. Maybe he'll show up later on? Or was he a token character? Who knows.

The only male love interest I kind of like is Orion, although even he himself is problematic at times, he at least has some redeeming qualities.
Site Note: I have no idea how this book isn't poly, and I'm disappointed that it isn't.

-The Twins attitude towards Geraldine. I get she's annoying but she's one of the ONLY characters in this book who actually treat Tory and Darcy nicely, but they essentially call her annoying and weird, and try to get away from her at all costs. They could be a bit kinder and maybe talk to her but I doubt these two know how to at this point.

If you like books like the House of Night series, HP, Twilight, Crave, essentially a book in a school setting with magic or supernatural beings, then this might work for you. It just felt too young (though it's not, it's in the NA range) but at the same time too problematic. Will I read more? Probably. Not because it's a good series but because I want to see what happens.

I've heard that the books and Heirs get better, that the romance and twins get better too, so I'm going to count on those people and hope that it does. Not to mention it's sometimes fun to fly through a bad book once in a while, so I apologize to the people who enjoyed this and let's see if my mind changes as I go. Fingers crossed!

I DNF'ed book 1...like twice. Couldn't get through it. It felt super young and immature.
Finally, I went back and pushed through...and HOLY #$%!!!!
I BLEW through the six books that are out and I. AM. OBSESSED.
Honestly, other than ACOTAR, this is the series that sucked me in the most this year. READ IT!!!!!!!!!
(P.S. It's free on Kindle Unlimited.)

But seriously, push through book 1. I promise it gets better. Much better.
Plot + magic + romance + spice + action + angst + friendship + frustration + tears. Everything. It has everything.
