A gender bent Sleeping Beauty retelling where Briar Rose is a prince waiting to be rescued by Fi, a nerdy treasure hunter trying to find the key to her own curse. Tagging along on this adventure is Shane, the axe-wielding, sarcastic, sidekick who is as funny as she is impatient. Briar Rose’s a 16 year old who has been stuck in a castle his entire life (and trapped under a sleeping curse for 100 years) who believes in destiny and happily ever after with his one true love Fi, who has sworn off love forever after a shitty ex ruined her life (like actually ruined her life - not just a teenage version). Shane is along for the journey as long as she gets to flirt with Red, a mysterious girl she and Fi meet along the way, and bash anything and everything with her axe.

Oh yeah and there’s a big bad looming but never seen (the Spindle Witch). It really set the stage for the rest of the series but in typical world building, had a slow start and I had a million questions along the way.

It’s Sleeping Beauty meets Indiana Jones and once it got going, I had trouble turning off the audiobook. I will be adding the rest of the series to my TBR because now I need to know how it all ends.

The Bone Spindle is a mixture of Indiana Jones and a gender-bent sleeping beauty - which had me all kinds of excited and did not disappoint at all! The story was fun and fast-paced, with simpler writing which was nice since it let you focus more on getting completely lost in the adventure of the story.

I picked this book up from the back to school YA section at my library and was looking for a lighthearted introduction to fantasy books. It checked all my boxes for exactly the kind of read I was looking for. Great storyline with characters that I felt so invested in that I grabbed the second book in the series when returning my copy to the library! It was a simple and fun read, I especially enjoyed one of the main characters who is queer but her backstory and character was written in way that it wasn’t the main focus of the book. I found it incredibly refreshing and comforting that the character’s queer aspects are written in such a societally normalized way.

I really wanted to read this book like a year ago when I first discovered it, and I think I would have enjoyed it more had I read it then. It was very fast paced all the way through, though I sort of lost interest around halfway, probably because I kept pausing to read other books, which is a bad habit that I do not recommend. I definitely liked the beginning of the book, and I enjoyed the flashbacks even more than I did the actual story, which surprises me. I would read a whole book about Fi’s adventures in treasure hunting, and a whole book about Briar’s childhood.

As for the characters, some of their relationships felt a bit underdeveloped to me, but this is the first book in a trilogy so it makes sense. But nothing bad can be said about Briar Rose. He honestly carried the entire book, which says a lot since he wasn’t in it nearly as much as any other character. He reminds me a lot of Keefe Sencen from Keeper of the Lost Cities. I hear that he has a lot more page time in the second book, so needless to say I am excited.

I also for some reason really liked the paper witch. I hope he’s a more prominent character in the rest of the trilogy.

Overall, this story definitely has potential, and I’m excited to see where it goes from here!
