Book 2 and I'm hooked! The entire story was great, but that ending...😳 😢
I'm loving the growing relationship between Crepsley & Darren!
Spoilers beyond this point 👉
Darren was a little insufferable with his struggles with drinking human blood, however I try to take into account his age, his strong moral character, and the age of the target audience. I realize his struggles make him a compelling character.
"Underneath me, Sam Grest - who'd been my friend and saved my life - lay perfectly still and slipped further and further into the final sleep of an unfair and horrible death."
Ultimately the brutality of the Wolf Man and Darren finally drinking Sam's blood so he would live on through Darren endeared this series to me.

Spoiler alert!!
I was SO close to crying.
Why did Sam have to die? R.V. got on my nerves in the end and yes it is fully his fault that Sam died. I don't care, if anyone says something different.
When I am reading CDF, I am fully submerged into the story. There is no feeling for time, I am very much in love with the story. (And I will fully side eye anyone who questions this only because I fall in love with books so much.)
I loved that Darren had a new friend and hate that he had to lose him. Basically eat him to keep him somewhat alive. Well, not eat him, but drain him of blood. And I really REALLY love the complicated relationship between Crepsley and Darren, it makes me want to cry, smile and scream in anger.
It never feels like only about 200 pages, it feels like a lot more. I am glad that there is more to come.

This was a great sequel. It wasn't as exciting as the last one, but towards the end it got heart poundingly awesome, and super captivating! Lots of new characters were introduced, which was awesome! The mystery thickened when a certain group of characters were introduced, and we get to see the Mr. Crepsley and Darren sort of get closer, their relationship is odd but you realize that they have eachother's back.
Darren has to say goodbye to his old life and hello to the life of drinking blood, and being a half vampire. He became one to save his best friend, Steve. He has left his family, friends and his life behind. All he has is Mr. Crepsley who he isn't very happy with. Darren is upset and furious that he turned him, and that he even wanted to turn him in the first place, in exchange for Steve's life. Darren realizes that he won't be able to make friends any more; no one will accept him because of what he is, of course everyone will be scared of him, he's a vampire. Darren has yet to accept the fact that he's a half vampire, he will only drink blood from an animal, he refuses to drink from a human. If he keeps this up, he won't be around for much longer...
Mr. Crepsley offers that they should return to The Cirque Du Freak, where Darren can be with others like him, who are different, so he can finally make friends. Darren agrees without second guessing, and returning to The Cirque Du Freak turns out to be great. He meets new people, including Evra, the half boy, half snake who he initially saw at the show for the first time. He also meets Sam, who is a few years younger than Darren. Sam is dedicated and determined to join The Cirque Du Freak. He doesn't care if that means leaving his family, or never seeing them again, he wants in, but it's not that easy..
Darren also meets people who aren't exactly on the same page; R.V, a vegetarian/crazy person who loves the environment and doesn't exactly agree with the way they run the show. Darren also meets the Little People, and their leader, Mr. Tiny. The leader seemed nice to Darren at first, until he heard what Evra had to say about him and his group. The Little People do not speak, and all they eat is meat.
Darren loves being with The Cirque Du Freak, he feels like he belongs. Relationships are put to the test, the plot thickens, people fight for what they believe in, and Darren has to decide whether to keep his humanity of accept the fact that he's also half vampire....
The ending to this sequel was crazy, and I cannot wait to read the third book, Tunnels of Blood! Looks like things are going to get even better...
