Thank you to NetGalley for providing an advanced copy of this book!

Wherever the Wind Takes Us by Kelly Harms really surprised me. What I thought would be a sort of “coming of age” book about life after marriage really turned into an adventure/rom-com. It took a while for me to get hooked but about half way through the book, I couldn’t put it down. If you’re looking for a unique romance with a bit of adventure, I would definitely recommend Wherever the Wind Takes us!

The story
Becca is 42, and recently divorced. She was a stay at home mom and wife for the last 22 years but is walking away from her marriage with almost nothing, except the kind judge decided she was entitled to her wealthy ex husband’s yacht. Becca aims to sell the yacht but the buyers she finds wants it delivered to Miami. This involves an seemingly epic voyage of self discovery for both Becca and her daughter Olivia. When Olivia bales out after a week and a bit, she calls her sailing teacher, Irishman Grant to take her place.

My thoughts
This story had very strong vibes of Trish Doller’s Float Plan, but replacing death with divorce as a place to grieve and make a second act, complete with a charming Irish sailor. Having said that, the sailing seems to be more of a metaphor for taking control of your life in this story, and I really enjoyed how the author did not shy away from the scary and technical aspects here. It underlined how serious an endeavour this was, and how hopelessly unprepared both Becca and Olivia were for this trip. The craziness of Becca’s ex-husband’s antics interspersed with his supposed generosity (suspect trying to keep control) provide a dollop of spice and interest. I have really enjoyed Kelly Harms’ other books and this one was great too!

Yet another Kelly Harms story that I really enjoyed! An MC in her 40s, mother-daughter relationship, SAILING, and starting a whole new life ~ these things all came together in an unexpected way and I had a lot of fun reading. The sailing jargon got a bit much for me at times because I know nothing at all about it but I was able to happily skim over the jibs and such and focus on the story. The story wasn’t really anything like “Float Plan” but the sailing theme reminded me of that beloved book.

My favorite thing about Kelly Harms is her ability to write about all facets of life and how she makes the reader feel like they are in the story.
42 year old Becca Larkin has given the entirety of her adult life to her 21 year old daughter and her now ex-husband. All she has to show for that is her daughter and a yacht she doesn’t want and decides to sell. With the help of a man 16 years younger, Becca faces her fears that have kept her grounded for the last 20 years and uncovers a part of herself she thought was gone forever.
Ms. Harms has a way of describing everything in a book perfectly. I felt like I was on the yacht with Becca and Grant. I have never wanted to sail before, in fact, the idea of it scares me terribly, but after seeing how Becca grew as a person and a sailor, I would actually consider it.
The combination of humor, conflict, heat, and grace that Ms. Harms incorporates into her books makes them some of the most real reads you’ll ever read.

Soothing quick read. Lots of great humor. Loved the complexity of the relationships - mother/daughter in close proximity, impacts of divorce, reality of learning who your parents are as people.
Really taking that chance you may have missed in your 20s or younger years. New experiences can be terrifying - what happens when you smile and embrace?

Kelly Harms has a knack for writing books that make you want to keep reading. I’ve read other books by her and love her writing style. This book is set on a boat that Becca Ann is delivering down the east coast to a new buyer after her divorce. It has an attractive male that adds an interesting twist to the story.

My favorite part was the ending because the way to the story ended. Perfect!!!

4.5 stars - almost perfect

Very enjoyable story of a mother rediscovering her self after a bad ending to a marriage and a divorce that leaves her all but broke. The rediscovering happens on board of a sailing yacht of which I very strongly approve.

There is romance, well done and not the focus of the story. The love interest is kind of too perfect though, he would be fighting women off with sticks if he existed in real life. However, this very fact made for a very, very cozy read where you could tell that there will be a happy ending from the get-go. There is enough going on to create tension without it ever ever feeling like contrived drama.

Everybody acts in a natural, plausible way and our MC's development makes sense for who she is and the situation she is in.

The sailing stuff feels very solid, I think Kelly Harms must be a sailor herself. Highly recommended.
