Dragged a bit at the beginning, good in the middle, overly dramatic at the end.

read it in one sitting, had to leave a tab with the family tree open tho lol

didn't expect it to be so funny and entertaining! loved the chaos and messy relationships

some parts even made me cry. especially the parts about the complexety of viet mother-daughter relationships - tbh it's what i wanted EEAAO to be, i hated that movie

This was super cute, really hard to keep track of the characters but I enjoyed it anyways! Loved the multi generational story lines and how it all came together in the end

The Duong sisters, a Vietnamese-American family, are cursed with only having daughters, they have been so for generations. They also don't get along very well with each other or their daughters. The eldest sister Mai is told by her trusted psychic that this year there will be a funeral, a pregnancy and a marriage in her family, things that will bring them together for the first time in years! The story is told from the perspective of 10+ women, all who have different aspirations and challenges.
This book is just hilarious. The drama is really dialed up and Huynh does an amazing job of making the chaos jump out of the page. I am usually a silent reader but I was actually cackling at parts of this book. It also takes a deep look at mother-daughter relationships, being the eldest or middle child in a family, as well as stereotypes Vietnamese Americans have to deal with. I did have to consult the family tree to remember who was who at times, but I really enjoyed the multiple points of views and how they propelled the story.
Pick this up for some really entertaining family drama! Thank you so much Atria Books, NetGalley and Carolyn Huynh for the ARC.

I love generational family books that delve into the inner workings of a family and this book did just that. This book follows over 14 Vietnamese women who are all "cursed" from generation to generation. It explores the different ways they are "cursed" in their lives but also how hard they work to transcend the curse and better their futures.

I loved how each segment of the family got their own story but also tied in to a larger story that encompassed the entire family. The ending to me was a bit abrupt, but it was fun to ride the rollercoaster the eccentric characters took us on and the chaos that ensued. This book explored the messy side of family through the different women suffering from grief, anger and jealously but it also conveyed the notion of family sticking by your side through thick and thin, even when you least expect it.
