Maybe I need to take a step back from reading these YA paranormals, because I'm getting irked with all the similar elements. Why does the male lead always have to be a "bad boy" who is always perfect looking with a bad attitude? And why does the female lead seem to always have almost nothing on her mind besides the boy?

This one was really no better or worse than the rest of what's out there, although I found it to be pretty slow moving, with not nearly enough action. The Dark Divine is well-written, though--enough that even though it was moving slowly I was inspired to keep reading.

It also seemed to take a little too long for the mystery to unfold. With Grace sitting back and not looking at what was right in front of her, all the while lamenting that she wants to know what's going on. In this sense the characterization was a bit uneven, for me.

I would probably recommend this to fans of YA paranormal, because it's really similar to the rest of what's out there, and if you like that, you'll like this.

This was a decent YA/PNR but nothing spectacular. Not sure if I'll continue with the series.

Bree Despain is a masterful writer! The Dark Divine is a book that plunks you down into a roller coaster car, tightens the harness and takes off without even giving you a chance to think twice. From the very first page I was hooked and there was no going back!

We meet Grace Divine, her sister Charity Divine and her brother Jude Divine. How much do you love their names? I know I did. They are the children of (fittingly enough) a pastor and have the "perfect family" vibe going on.

Enter Daniel Kalbi. A spectre from their past, and Grace's long time crush. After vanishing, he comes back unexpectedly and Grace finds herself falling for him all over again. Except this time, he's a different person and there is something mysterious about him.

Grace is a really fantastic main character. I have heard others say that she doesn't actually contribute a lot to the story, but I disagree. Following her through the story is intriguing, and seeing how her upbringing affects her decisions is intense. There are so many times in the story that Grace is stuck in a moral quandary and still makes a great decision.

Long story short? Really enjoyed this book!

I loved this book. It was the best one I think I read in a while. I was constantly wondering what happens next, and I kept wanting more, I really could not put it down. And what ends up happening is crazy. Grace's family was cool too I dont know anybody like them so even that little part was good. The direction the story took was unexpected, I thought it wasnt a fanasy genre but it turned out to be which made it that much better. This is a book I can see myself reading again and again.

I didn't expect to enjoy this book nearly as much as I did and even if it isn't fine literature, I still found myself staying up until 2am so that I could finish it. Anyone familiar with genre can guess what the big dark secret is going to be but there are enough new twists on the theme and the story still unfolds in a way that kept me interested and little on the edge of my seat. I would have rated it 4 stars if it wasn't for the awful headers between each scene change. The book is filled with dividers that proclaim "A few minutes later" "Wednesday afternoon at lunch" etc. Every time a location or time changes between the action one of these dumb proclamations is there in all caps, bold and underlined. It's distracting and annoying. The writing itself tells me everything I need to know about where the characters are both in location and time. I don't need this obnoxious header.

Actually a 2.75 star rating.
I liked the basic of the book. A girl who is friends with her brother and his best friend. Then something happens during the night, the friend disappears and the brother is hurt. I liked what happened and how it all played out in the end.
What I didn't like was our main character, Grace Divine (the name was the least of my dislikes about her). I don't like her attitude and her way of thinking at all! The book is filled with her snobbish thinking and religious believes (I'm cool with religion but not when you are whacking it in my face and pushing it down my throat like this). Do I recommend this book? Only if you can stand a snobbish character pushing religious thoughts down your throat while saying how smart she is but not really noticing what is going on for real while falling for a guy who is not treating her in a good way...

Probably would've enjoyed this if I was 15 - the age I was when this book originally came out.
