The Mortal Instruments is one of those rare examples where the Hollywood version outshines the book. Not the movie, that is, but the new(ish) TV show on Freeform.
I find myself caring so much more for the characters as portrayed by the actors than from the page. Almost all of the problems the characters face could be resolved by FUCKING TALKING TO EACH OTHER, which is my biggest pet peeve as far as plot goes, and it only gets more and more convoluted, almost for the sake of being Edgy. The pacing of the book is strange and hard to pin down.
It's not the worst thing I've ever read. The premise is very interesting, and there are moments where the characters shine. Unfortunately, I'm not going to be finishing the series (4-6) or reading any of her other works based on what I've come to expect from the first three.

disliked this book — writing is poor and plot holes and I didn’t love the characters.

Review to come. I literally wanted to know how the average rating is so high on this book, but now I understand even less.
She describes the only character of color as having "maple syrup colored skin". WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Is his skin translucent? What grade is it? Is it real maple syrup or some cheap rip off? So many questions.

This was a re-read for me, and I really loved as well the second time around, it ranks higher than the fourth book, but lower than the others for me

It’s more of a 2.5/5.
Clary is- she’s quite simply very annoying at times, maybe it’s because it’s been years since this books release and I am far too over the whole “breathtakingly gorgeous girl who doesn’t think she’s beautiful” trope as well as her genuinely being kind of useless at times even though I know that’s obviously like she can’t control it. There are a lot of things that did kind of peeve me off but again these were loosely pointed out including the whole Clary has no idea that Simon is in love with her thing (she’s kinda dumb).
I really enjoyed the characters and the world and of course I’m about 5000 years late on this bandwagon as per usual so just to reiterate, I’m reading this because I miss the show (I get a lot of parts of it are apparently terrible) but Malec- malec is perfection. So I guess this has nothing to do with the book but I already knew about a lot of the plot points etc and even then I still think that some of the reveals are quite obvious.
I did love Simon and I loved Jace ans was surprised at the rocky and hostile nature of Izzy and Clary at the start considering it’s so different in the show but I’m gonna enjoy hopefully seeing that really really develop.
Overall this book was good? Could have been better could have been worse but mostly I’m just excited to see growth, clarification and development in the rest of the series.
ALSO I DID IT, AFTER YEARS AND YEARS I FINALLY READ A CASSANDRA CLARE BOOK.

I would've like this book better if it weren't for the twist. It's just agh!

I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Clary discovers an underworld in New York and creatures that she but others cannot see. Her mother is kidnapped and her best friend is turned into a rat. The story in told in a way that makes this actuallly believeable and interesting. That rat episode had me laughing so hard and involved a daring rescue trip to get Simon back from the vampire lair before he was eaten. And oh, then there were werewolves. Fun and fascinating, with an undertone of alienation and the quest for belonging.

I forgot how much I was "eh" borderline disliked Clary. That's pretty much it - can't get too far into a book that you don't like the mc of.
