Might just be me unfairly comparing to Maria Snyder's past series, but this one fell a bit flat for me. I expected clever writing, witty dialogue, strong and smooth development of the plot and relationships. Yet, at times I couldn't see the point of certain events, I didn't care for some deaths, and I really did not understand the 'noble sacrifice' drama in the romance. Most of the book was angst over logistics or being caught. But when it came down to it, the actual action or danger faced is fleeting and not that suspenseful.
Okay, now that I've nitpicked enough, I must say the book itself is actually decent and readable, and I'm likely going to continue the series. I just can't seem to stop trying to find the next Poison Study or Touch of Power in every new book, but that's probably just me.

I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy of The City of Zirdai.
I loved The Eyes of Tamburah but The City of Zirdai was even better. The stage was set in book one, but now Shyla, Redor and their allies get to really shine as we dive deeper in book two.
Two corrupt rulers, a hostile world, and a woman with untrained powers to best them all. I was rooting for the Invisible Swords and was swept away as their story unfolded and twisted in ways I didn't see coming. The pacing is fast, but I appreciated it as things are happening fast for Shyla as well and it helped to connect me with her character.
A sequel that exceeded my expectations! Can't wait for more!

I'll confess I may be a little biased, because I just love Maria. I love every one of her books I've read (which I'm woefully behind - there's still 4-5 I need to catch up on). This book was not your typical "second novel" - meaning it didn't feel like it lacked a beginning or ending the way a lot of middle novels do. There was plenty of action and excitement - to be honest, I was actually surprised by just how much happened by the end of the this book (I don't want to give away spoilers, but let's just say some of the events of this book I was sure wouldn't happen until the next book). I'm immediately starting on the third book, because I cannot wait to see what adventure awaits next. If you're a scifi/fantasy fan but haven't yet read any of Maria's books, I cannot recommend them highly enough!
