This book had a lot of potential but towards the end it just kind of fell off. I really like the characters and the storyline. But the ending was so bland. Honestly that's the reason why it lost so many stars. God I read it but definitely not reading anymore of her stuff.

Well, I usually rate within genres but this five star is an overall one. The story is great, the character development is fabulous, the pace and dialogue are great. It was just a thoroughly good read.
It's a murder mystery in the police line but is not a procedural. A specialized team comes together under an experienced officer. A young woman from the north joins them. Their major case is the disappearance then murder of a businessman. The plot thickens from there. The side stories and background characters are also woven beautifully.

Listened to this as an audiobook; I thought the pacing of the story was pleasant, though the ending felt a bit contrived. Quite enjoyable, and a nice start to a new series.

Listened on a car trip. Story seemed disjointed and uneven. The prologue was not explained until the very end of the book. That contributed to the confusion as you sorta knew that Kala Stonechild was one of the two girls in the prologue but the connection was weird. Kala moves to Ottawa to work as a detective in order to get away from a break up with a married man. A murder occurs during the Christmas holidays that could either be related to a mans business dealings or jealousy. None of the story generated much to cause me to be interested in any of the characters. Vaguely developed characters that seem obvious that the series with continue

Finished this audiobook while driving to a wedding - it was an excellent keep-you-awake and rooting for the protagonist to succeed title. I loved how the author intertwined the various pasts of the individual characters to create a beautifully engaging tapestry with a very satisfying end. If you enjoy crime stories, definitely add this one to your shelf!

A mystery that is more about the characters and the setting than the who-done-it.
And I enjoyed the characters and the setting. I am immediately onto book 2.

This book introduces you to Kala Stonechild and Jacques Rouleau who are both people that anyone would want to know better. But both are focused on their jobs, which is murder.

Note about the audiobook:
I am not sure if it is the production, the narrator, or the writing; but I had to constantly rewind to figure out whose voice was speaking. The narration shifts throughout, and I often wouldn't notice the shift immediately.

Give me all of her books! I am in love with this crime series! I am not normally a fan of detective/crime novels and solely read them for filler, but this one was just wonderful! I can't wait to read more about Stonechild and her continued efforts in law enforcement.
