I really enjoyed this book, it felt well put together, the storylines made sense and progressed the overall series plot well. Sookie comes to learn more about her grandmother and her telepathy. Merlottes bar is victim to a series of misfortune, for a portion of this you aren’t sure if it’s aimed at Sam because he’s a shifter, at Sookie because the Regent of La is trying to take down Eric or if there is a different reason behind the misfortune. Eventually as the truth is revealed, the book ties back into some earlier plot points in the series. This book really did an excellent job at making up for the previous books lackluster. Along with a fantastic melding of multiple story lines from not only within the book but within the entire series, you get to see a different side of some of the characters. Pam’s character is developed quite a bit in this book and in a very well done and pleasant way. The dynamic between Pam and Eric is shifted a bit throughout this book, as the friendship between her and Sookie seems to grow. Bill and Sookie relationship evolves more, not necessarily romantically but it’s more matured and sensible. Which is refreshing after how tense, distant and awkward they’ve been in the last few novels. Also most importantly, Vampire Bubba returns to the story, his character always brings out such joy and emotion for me.

Finished this one about a week ago but forgot to mark it. I enjoy these books but I do admit this isn't one of my favorites... I am hoping the mood swings back up soon but unsure if it will... onto the next one!

CAREFUL - FILLED WITH SPOILERS!!

What a twisted, thoroughly wild ride! Sookie got Amelia's help to get rid of her bond to Eric, and that made her both sad and happy, and it pissed Eric off for quite a while. Victor continued his ministrations to get Eric to do something stupid so he could kill him without consequences. Sandra Pelt came back with a vengeance, and Sookie found out more things about herself as part fairy, her grandma, and quite a few other things.

So many things happened in this book, and far from all of them were happy! There was a really fast rythm, and I still was very happy with the way Sookie was feeling and acting, and how she was standing up for herself.

There were a lot more violence than usual (or have I forgotten how much happened in prior books?) Sandra tried to kill Sookie several times, first by using other people, then, by trying to do it herself, and being caught by the police only to escape again.

Some other tugs tried to kill Sookie as well, and we got a very humorous moment when Sookie was able to escape to Bill's house, find his daytime sleeping place and hide there - all naked :D

Amelia did some stupid things to interfer in Sookies lovelife, and Sookie came back home from a night with Eric to find Alcide sleeping in her bed :O

Finally, Sooke came up with a plan to kill Victor, and it totally worked, after a long fight, and most of the casualties on the 'bad' side.

There was all the sweetness with Tara's baby-shower, then some explanations with Cateliades in the kitchen before he had to run off from his own potential killers.

At the very end, Sandra came back, having taken Janalynn and Sam hostage at gunpoint, but she ended up dead in a completely disgusting way at Janalynn's hands before she was disposed of through the fairy veil in the woods.

Claude is up to something for sure, but he really wasn't any more forthcoming than usual. And all the men are still in love with Sookie! Eric (though he has been promised in marriage to the Queen of Oklahoma - hello future tangles!) Bill, Alcide, and now, maybe even Sam, as he seemed really shocked with Janalynn's violence.

There were more things happening, but I won't get into them right now. And this is more than full enough of spoilers anyway!

Let's put it this way, I don't like when books don't go my way. I liked the premise that this book had when Sookie and Eric went after Victor, but I was so aggravated when I found out that Eric basically had a side piece. I just wanted to hug Sookie and shake Eric and be like what the hell are you doing with your life?!?! Try harder to get rid of the Queen of Oklahoma!!!

I felt as if Eric wasn't trying hard enough to get out of his "marriage" to the Queen of Oklahoma. I think I felt like he wasn't trying hard enough because how he's going about the situation now kind of went against how much he says he loves Sookie. He loves her so much he told her that he would give up Fangtasia and his place in the Vampire Hierarchy to mainstream so he could be with her if that's what it took (Book 4). At the time he had no memory but he brings up later once he regains the memories of what happened during that time that he was sincere in how much he loves her. If he loved her that much he would do anything and everything to get out of his marriage to the Queen of Oklahoma because he would rather be with Sookie than anyone else. He may be trying more than we see in the book but from what we are shown his actions contradict his love for Sookie and that drives me insane because I only want to see them together as they are for certain flashes of later books.

I'm curious to see what happens there and if Eric and Sookie's relationship will remain in tact and weather this storm. I would really like it to, but a side piece isn't really something that you can repair very easily. Eric may have more luck because he's Eric, but only time will tell. Only a few more months to wait until the next one comes out!

Dead Reckoning

Unfortunately, this installment in the Sookie Stackhouse series continues in the same vein as the previous book with a confusing mess of disjointed plot threads that never seem to come together.

While the individual story lines (the plan to dispose of Victor, the vampire regent threatening Eric's interests, the newest attempts by the obsessively psychopathic Sandra Pelt to dispose of Sookie, and the continued revelations concerning the faerie branch of her family tree), all have tremendous potential, the are thrown together haphazardly with no coherent flow or connection resulting in a book devoid of any atmosphere, tension or suspense.

In terms of Sookie's love-life, it is clear that Harris is moving in a specific direction with regard to her romantic future. Although the choice is probably the most suitable given Sookie's nature, it results in some very questionable characterization as the author attempts to remove all obstacles to this pairing by undermining Sookie's relationships with previous contenders. Thus, Eric, Bill and Alcide (no Quinn interestingly enough) behave in ways that are exceedingly strange and inconsistent with their previous actions. Eric in particular is transformed from the confident, charming and sexy alpha vampire into a hesitant and insecure shadow of his former self.

Altogether, a rather disappointing addition to the series, but I an invested enough in Sookie and her friends to continue on and find out how it all ends.

Not as good as the others - but still entertaining. I wish Eric was a real person. I would marry him.

I really enjoyed reading this one. I didn’t love it, but I still had a pretty good time. Usually I wouldn’t have made it this far into a series that A) is not really a ‘paranormal romance’ and was more a mystery series like this, and b) had main characters like sookie because most of the time I’m barely tolerating her. But I have really enjoyed it. Maybe it’s because they’re so easy to read? Maybe it’s because I loved the tv show so much that it added a layer to the characters for me to love when I read these or even just that I read it in high school and enjoyed it so now I’m remembering the good times and putting up with things I normally wouldn’t? I don’t know, but I enjoy the action, I enjoy just spending time with these characters even when they shit me.

I do have issues with the series, like the fact all these have happened in TWO YEARS, because I was picturing it way more drawn out than that in my head, mainly because if 11 books worth of drama and assasinations and plotting and torture happened to me, all in two years, I’d be outta there. Leave the country girl, or at least leave the state, how is she even mentally there after all this? Some books have numerous deaths and even three or four attempts at this girls life, like that’s trouble every few needs a break.
