Review originally posted on my blog: I Heart Fictional People

INITIAL THOUGHTS

I haven’t read Melissa Foster in years, but I remember loving her books. Because I have been a bit more cynical about love in recent years, I didn’t know if I would enjoy her books as much as I used to, but I really wanted to try this one because I have heard such good things.

(By the way, a lot of this review will be vague because I really don’t want to give anything away.)

WHAT I LIKED

Tank. Tank has my whole heart. He’s the ultimate book boyfriend, and everyone else in all of fiction pales in comparison. When I named my blog I Heart Fictional People, this is who I imagined, and it took me six years to find him. Melissa Foster, thank you for creating this beautifully kind, protective, patient, and compassionate man.

Leah. What I loved the most about Leah was that she was real and relatable. I could see myself in her. I could see myself making similar decisions and worrying about the same things. Sometimes her thoughts and feelings are irrational, but that’s what makes her so real. We’ve all been there. She’s doing the best she can under the circumstances, and I had so much admiration and respect for her throughout the book.

The Wickeds. Can these people be real and adopt me please?? I’m just kidding; I have a great family

SPOILERS:

Listen, the spice level is high here which is fun however if I read one more modern romance where it all ends in pregnancy and engagement I’m going to lose my mind. That is not everybody’s HEA. I love a strong male lead and can even handle him being overprotective but the rest in this book and most others is all such boring patriarchal conditioning. This female lead goes through terrible trauma and immediately finds a living supportive chosen family and partner. That’s great but can she just live with that for a minute? I think I’m going to need TWs for this garbage. If the female lead is in her early 20’s and there are kids I’M OUT. I am BEGGING writers to expand there character base to focus on grown, independent, women at least in their 30’s. We all hear how worthless we become as we age, why are women writers further supporting this belief? Im sick of it.

Melissa Foster is known for her heart-touching novels. I am always prepared to bring out the crying pillow when I read one of her books. However, she has gone over and beyond with the feels in The Wicked Aftermath. OHMIGOODNESS, this book broke my heart and put it back together again. I have never ever read so many teeny tiny phrases that broke my heart--small heart vignettes filled this novel.

Tank Wicked had suffered loss, and Tank feels things deeply. However, he's not a big talker or flirt; he's Tank, the quiet one. Leah has grown up fast, but she loves her life of caring for and raising her brother's two girls and living with her beloved brother. Tank is attracted to Leah, but she keeps herself removed from attachments while she's working for the Wickeds at their restaurant/bar.

One night changes everything for Tank and Leah. Heartbreaking tragedy strikes Leah, and the two small girls and their lives become intertwined with the Wickeds. The Wickeds once again prove the kind of people and family they are by loving Leah and the girls as they grieve. And in the midst of all this, Leah and Tank fall for each other. Honestly, y'all, this story had so many elements that just took the story to the next level of beauty. If you didn't adore the Wickeds before, you surely will now. Melissa, someday there will have to be a book involving those two little girls when they are grown. I'm still marinating in the goodness, although bittersweet goodness, that is The Wicked Aftermath.

When I say I loved this book, I mean I LOVED this book. I read over 200 books a year and this is the first book I've ever written a review on. Something about the characters makes you just absolutely fall in love with the story. Tank stalked into my heart and refused to leave after the book is over, and I'm all right with that!

Broken in the best way. I cried so much (just in the beginning, then you get a nice happy growing relationship) I loved this romance. The grief these two characters carried was palpable. Watching them face it, come together, lean on each other and grow made my actual heart smile. I loved the cast of characters and the families and can’t wait to read the other books in this series. I also appreciated that there was no third act breakup for some dumb reason. Sometimes I just want a good ol’ HEA and this delivered (after of course ripping my heart out in the first 4 chapters lol)

I can honestly say I've never cried within the first three chapters of a book like I did with this one. The emotion just pours off the page. Tank and Leah's story is so awesome. It's filled with so much emotions and best of all family being there for each other. Fate brought them together with baggage needed for them to be together. The detail in the story telling is what draws you in and keeps you there.
I recommend this 10000%
