Lacklustre ending to the series.

This book was all over the place and I couldn’t get engaged in it. It started off with time jumps and miscommunications- which I despise- and the whole secret of who cousin Michael is, that’s been withheld from us the entire series, was revealed in the first chapter. It was all very underwhelming. Add to that a murder mystery was introduced at the 70% mark, changing the trajectory of the book from them finding their way together, to them being impeded by him being a suspect in his wife’s murder. Just overall I didn’t enjoy this read. It sucks when it’s an author you like, and the writing style is so familiar and comforting but the story is crap.

I waited 4 books for Charlotte's story and it was worth it! Charlotte and David's backstory had me gagged. It was so dramatic and tragic and made me feel all the feels. I wept! And their rekindling was no less dramatic. I ate it up lmao

While I certainly enjoyed the brief jaunt back in time to explain the central conflict between Charlotte and David, the bond the two of them formed in the story's "present," seemed somewhat superficial. The sex scenes were steamy and certainly aligned with both Charlotte's and David's personalities. Charlotte's willful and opinionated character was fun to read. I wish that we had been privy to some excerpts from the letters shared between the two of them over the years. However, between Charlotte and David's troubled past, the mystery of Cousin Michael, the potentially looming racetrack construction, Sarah's death, and the conflict between David and his brother-in-law, there were so many conflicts that the relationship didn't have time to develop into something beyond sex in the standard 384 allotted pages. 3/5

Charlotte and David where supposed to marry when they where younger but things went terribly wrong and they eventually both wound up married to other people for a while...
This story has revenge on several fronts, schools, deaths, and more to it but unfortunately for me it's also a second chance romance which is my least favorite kind. So while the characters where fine I found the set up/conflict kind of silly.

Honestly, it was all the annoying misunderstandings that ruined this for me. I couldn't handle the main characters going through the whole book not only reliving past BIG MIS's, but also creating new ones. And while Charlotte and her guy weren't particularly bad characters in a deal-breaker way, I found their behavior silly over time and couldn't connect.

The shenanigans were just so very contrived and trivial.

Series note: This is the last book in the series and readers are finally rewarded with the revelation of "Cousin Michael's" identity as well as the reason for his anonymity. While there are references to characters and events from previous books, it is actually only necessary to read book #1 to fully appreciate this one.

An excellent conclusion to the series.

Charlotte and David's second chances romance is very engaging. They have intense chemistry and their interactions, both physical and emotional, are incredible. The flashback scene detailing their initial relationship is seamlessly integrated within the story and provides significant insight into their character development. The only minor issue for me is the length of their separation - 18 years is a seriously long time!

The minor mystery revolving around the death of David's wife is compelling although it isn't difficult to guess the ultimate explanation.

All in all, a fantastic read and I look forward to continuing with the spin-off series - The Hellions of Halstead Hall with the first book focusing on David's friend, the disreputable Lord Stoneville.

If I and the man can sit and snark about this without breaking a sweat...well, yeah. Also I object to Our Hero calling Our Heroine's bodacious ta-tas 'my beauties.'
