Definitely a formidable adaptation; this book breaths fresh new life into Dazai's original masterpiece. Recommend

The most beautiful and depressing reading experience I have ever had. I’d like to read the original novel after finishing Ito’s adaptation but I need some time to process and recover

A very challenging read. The translator did forewarn the reader though. Very somber book. How sad it must be to live through life unsure of how to interact with people and resorting to "clowning" to get by. And the disastrous relationships! There is probably some kind of philosophy in the novel but I could never understand it well enough. In the end, he because numb to everything. And he seemed much more comfortable in that. Or at least that's what I got from it. Maybe it was the wording or difficult translation.

Ito has added his own disturbing visuals to the novel by Osamu Dazai. This was a journey through the darkest side of humanity, a visceral experience that clutched my heart. Not very often is a book so disheartening that I can't bear to read it in large sittings, but this was one I had to digest in bite-sized chunks.

This story is rife with abuse, loneliness, betrayal, murder, and so much more. The accompanying illustrations were gorgeous and added so much to the experience. I can't wait to read the original source material.

What stuns me most about this book is that it portrays the mind of a truly believable person, living behind a facade of forced and faked happiness. No Longer Human is a deeply unsettling and saddening book about a man who believes he is not suited for this world, and finds societal integration an impossible task. What really struck me with this book is that singular thought: what must it be like to feel totally exalted from humanity and society? I believe this novel answers that question with a deep and wallowing sadness, and explains very carefully the thoughts and feelings of someone living with severe depression, anxiety and worry. The book does jump between time periods a lot, and can oftentimes be slightly tricky to keep up with, but after finishing it, I gained an important insight into conditions that I have never, thankfully, had to deal with, and gives me a renewed sense of admiration and respect for people that are suffering from similar experiences as the ones presented in this novel.

Such a page turner! It’s an incredible story told with quite the ending. It’s so good it made the hairs on my arms stick up. Great thriller, tragedy, and comedy.
