A decent book, I felt like some of the plot elements introduced were odd and weren’t ever built upon. I almost stopped reading the book because I was tired of the Soneji/Murphy thing

For the life of me, I have no idea why I thought Alex Cross was a female for so many years. I think perhaps I got Patterson's two series mixed up in my head. And I've never seen the movie versions of any of his books. It was wonderful to go into a book with almost no preconceived notions of what the book would be.

Or maybe I did. I clearly thought this was your typical kidnapping, bad guy vs good cop kind of story. Which it is. Kind of. With a twist.

The characters and the out of nowhere changes in direction kept me going and intrigued throughout the whole novel. The major plot twist came out of nowhere but once it was revealed, the resolution sort of went downhill. This book was a 5 star book right up until that point. 4.5 stars, rounded up because it was soooooo good.

Why does this book have so many stars on Goodread? Or anywhere for that matter. The dialogue between the characters was forced and terrible. Did Patterson have an African American consultant for this book? Because I have a feeling he didn’t. It felt like he put his own thoughts and feelings into what he imagined life would be like for the main character, and not actually what the world is actually like for an African American cop in DC. The relationship between the main characters was also terrible and felt forced. Again with the female characters, it felt like he used his own opinions of women rather than getting someone that is actually female to write the love interest.
I could go on, but frankly, I don’t have the desire to dissect this terrible terrible book.

Okay, so first off, there was a lot of killing in this book. I wasn't prepared for that. Especially, the small children. That's just too sad for me. The rest of the book was great though.

The story throws you into the life of Alex Cross, a detective, who is investigating a triple murder. During his investigation, Alex is wrangled into helping with a kidnapping. The whole thing go terribly wrong and that's when the story starts to get good. There are so many twists and turns it will leave your heads turning. I gave this book four stars and put the next story on my TBR pile.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

this was a thoroughly "ok" book. i didnt really have a problem with cross, though he did seem to underreact sometimes...a kidnapper and known child murderer is on the loose, calling you out specifically for some unknown reason to deliver a huge ransom, and the culprit escapes. cross knows he is a target and has two young children of his own, but he spends a unsettling amount of time on getaways with the unfortunately named and extremely boring jezzie. i also didnt care for the shifting pov from first to third, and HATED the maggie rose pov. i am usually pretty forgiving when it comes to stylistic choices, especially if the story is compelling (like this one claimed to be), but i found myself reading passages and noticing how awkwardly worded they were. it took me out of the environment the book tried to create.

all that said, i finished it in about 3 sittings. the main antagonist is fairly interesting, as well as nana mama and sampson. i dont think i will be rushing out to read the sequel though.
