Bridget Jones is lighthearted and relatable and funny. Easy reading and enjoyable.

The only issue I have with the books overall is the obsessive behavior towards weight and food and the ingrained message that skinny=pretty and fat(i.e. being a size 10 or over)=ugly.

Alright, to be fair, this book is the reflection of those times, particularly the obsession of calories, little body positivity and obsession of men. I guess I could see what made people buy it as it was really humorous, but it did not have the overall charm the movie had. I guess that's a mistake on my end; never watch the movie before reading the book cause things will just be ruined for you.

Overall, it's a meh book; and I'm so glad the movie did it justice.

Really loved this more than I thought I would (in reading slump so diary form works for me). Did not expect Mark Darcy to have me kicking my feet. Just wish it didn’t have the diet culture that was rampant in y2k era

Though it was written more than twenty years ago. Women still struggle with the same aspects in life.
Bridget is the perfect example for an everyday woman. Plus I hadn’t read any diary like books as an adult. I must say I enjoyed it for once very much. Imo the vocabulary used in this romance book is indeed extended.

However I must say that the obsessive calorie counting and restricting and tw purging should’ve been discussed considerably more. Could be quite triggering. Also because it’s just tolerated and only briefly mentioned that a grown human being needs at least two thousand calories a day.
That set me in slight rage.

Despite of that fact I just love Bridget jones and I even feel the chemistry between Bridget and Mark.
I just feel at home reading.

I realize this book is supposed to be tongue in cheek and cute, but I just have such a problem with this depiction of women that is so popular in "Chick Lit" writing. I don't mind light reads, but I can't stand books that are simply women who complain about their lives but are complete idiots and can't improve their own situation. Still hunting for a smart chick lit author - I have a few promising options on the horizon, though.

filed under: did-not-finish

i don’t like to leave books unfinished bc i’m slightly OCD in that sense and it just bothers me to leave things open and not to have some sort of closure. i’m pretty sure you might find a metaphor about my life and relationships in there somewhere.
that being said: while i appreciate this book for its cultural impact and its realistically depressing portrayal of the 90s ‘singleton’ brainwashed by mass media, i’d rather die than finish this book.

I was following through this book for several chapters, but I ended up losing interest in this book and just never finished it. I didn't really like the way it was written.
