I didn’t read the original series this one was based off of so the world building was unfamiliar and made things a little slow at first. From what I understand, Sebastian was the reluctant villain and has since made up with the heroes of the previous series. I do love a good redemption story, and he seemed a perfect fit for one. I also loved the abrasive lord Fine. I was loving the chemistry between the reformed bad boy Sebastian and the confident Wesley. This was an enjoyable start and I am looking forward to reading more about these self proclaimed scoundrels.

After a long hour with numerous characters I could not tell apart, I wondered if reading the first series was a necessity. The first 25% is an information dump about happenings in the past. After all those details I immediately forgot, the two main characters meet. There are a few sweet scenes with them, but this is not a romance novel.

The narration was not always up to JF's standard. He can do great but lately I find him more often uninspired. Especially the first quarter of the novel he was stuck in a rut, giving each sentence the same tone and infliction.

Such an easy read, I didn't even realize I was already almost finished with the book until I noticed I only had a couple chapters left. I was worried this would be same book different fonts but I'm glad the dynamic seems to be completely different. LOVE these two characters and their relationship, such a fun read

I first read this book two years ago, I know I enjoyed it but I also kind of forgot I read it til I was part way through this most recent read and started to notice some familiar scenes! However, the first time I read it, I hadn't read any of the Magic in Manhattan books, because Proper Scoundrels was billed as a standalone book in the same setting as the Magic in Manhattan books, so I figured I could still enjoy it. And even though I did really like it, this second read was *even better* since I have read the Magic in Manhattan books. Having already gotten invested in this universe, getting more context to the storylines, getting to first meet Wesley and Sebastian as villains - it all made this book that much better and more fun. There were some small bits here and there, references and allusions to events from the other books that, while not having the context didn't detract from the story at all, *having* the context was just an extra little treat.

What a good M💜M book! Cool magic system with a mysterious magical killer on the loose! Great dynamic between the main characters, very grumpy/sunshine. They are written well and I enjoyed reading!

Joel Froomkin does a great job narrating, as always!

I’m really shocked with how much I enjoyed this and his quickly the characters grew on me. I didn’t care all too much about the conflict, but I did appreciate the magic and fantasy elements to it and can’t wait to read more of this series.
Fine and Sebastian had me swooning for all of their interactions and I love them so much!
The only downside for this novel would have to be the “insta-love” vibe it gave off. I actually enjoy insta-love, but find that most of the time if it has a level of sexual tension that drives it, then we need to see it on page since it’s important to the character’s development and is a big part of their connection with each other.
There isn’t any explicit spice, but it’s not fade to black every time either. It happened to be more telling and not showing which hindered the character’s inevitable connection and relationship.
Regardless it’s such a good story and I loved it.
