I just love George RR Martin.
His stories always have twists and turns that feel like him. If you are fond of those, his books are all great but if you are not, well then you won't like any of his books. Fortunately, I'm one of those who like his writing / storytelling.

Beautifully illustrated and very interesting book. Loved the storyline and characters. Couldn't put it down. Reading to my son now. (Slightly edited) ;-)

Entertaining novellas in the tradition of Arthurian tales. Simple and innocent return to form. Doesn't quite feel like the GOT world. Better than the last GOT books.

Well written but not amazing. Relies too much on a few character traits so the main characters don't feel developed enough.

Would have been better if he'd explored the stories as full size books. Feels like theres a depth lacking and untapped potential for character developments. Would have liked to get to know side characters more.

Tries to explore political divides in the final novella but fails to make any interesting statements and ultimately sides with the status quo. Anticlimactic and unsatisfying conclusion but a nice diversion on the way there.

Enjoyed the portrayal of hedge Knight life, small and large scale political problems, and Dunk's unfortunate romantic life.

Looking forward to reading more Dunk and Egg stories.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a great introduction to Dunk and Egg, who you hear about throughout the Song of Ice and Fire novels. I felt it did a great job of filling in some background. It gave more information about the beginning of the Targaryens, along with some houses that are no longer around in SoIAF. Overall, I highly recommend it. It's lighter on the violence than the other GRRM books, so I would recommend it starting at YA. I look forward to more on Dunk and Egg, but not until after The Winds of Winter is finished!! :)

I really love these stories. Possibly my favorite out of the ASOIAF books! A simple story about a knight, a squire, an inter-dynastic feud, honor, class and status, and water rights.

Oh, hey, I read this when it came out (which must have been early 2000's because I was working at 21st Century Comics at the time) and I just now realized who wrote this. I've just started the Song of Fire and Ice series... maybe I'll reread this to see if anyone I'm becoming familiar with makes a cameo.

As a book on its own, this would only be okay. However, having already read the main ASOIF books and seen GoT, this book is worth a read.
The writing style is still very much Martin's, complete with feasting scenes and awkward descriptions of nude bodies. That said, it has a different, lighter tone than the main ASOIF books that makes the stories more fun to read.
As for the stories, without getting into details, they are great at building the world of ASOIF, especially the class interactions of knights, hedge-knights, and landed lords or royalty.
Finally, the illustrations were great too. Some are rather simple and you can pass over them, others are far more artistic and it takes a moment to fully grasp the artist's intention.

A great read as we go back into the past of Westeros while waiting to find out what will happen next.
