Intermediate Thermodynamics is second in Susannah’s STEManist series  Chemistry Lessons. Although, this is less of a series and more of an interconnected STEMaverse. Well loved characters from the first book Remedial Rocket Science make a brief appearance which gave me a smile (although I wish there was a bit more interactions). Even our love interest is someone you might remember !!

Whilst, Remedial Rocket Science introduced me to Susannah’s work and the STEManist field it had a few things left to be desired. Personally, I felt the book (1) rushed the ending, and (2) was wildly lacking spice. But, I’m ecstatic to say that Intermediate Thermodynamics fixed both of these issues.

When I started the book I was unsure of the characters… but as I started to read I found myself truly sucked in. For the first time ever a romance novel made me truly unable to put a book down. I’m excited to progress on with other books within the series. I truly hope that they get better with each one.

Honestly, the plot and writing in this book were pretty messy, but I kept reading and eventually gave it 3 stars because the two main characters, Esther & Jonathan, had the kind of chemistry that makes your heart actually pound. I am such a character-driven reader, so I love stories where you want exactly what the character wants; in this instance, Jonathan wants Esther, and Esther wants (well really, needs) to learn how to open up her heart. They had the type of will-they, won't-they that is actually believable (and built on something other than just straight up miscommunication, a pet peeve of mine), and has you absolutely dying to find out how they resolve. The ending was kind of strange & abrupt, but I still feel like I got the resolution I wanted.

The side stories about Esther's friendship with Jinny & her issues at work were decent and interesting. The stuff with her mom was a little weird but it's important to establish her backstory. And Jonathan's script writing is mostly just a plot device (until *that* script that he gives her towards the end - anyone else think of Wentworth's letter to Anne in Persuasion?? ahhhhhhh) but none of that really bothered me. Again, I was in it for Esther & Jonathan.

This book was more about a woman learning about herself than a relationship. Johnathon is about as interesting as cardboard. He wants to write screen plays but sucks at it. He is awkward with women and his parents still pay his rent. That’s all I know. He has no personality. He is a place holder.

Okay, at first I wasn’t sure I could like these characters. But they grew and in doing so grew on me.
I appreciated that the cross over with precious characters from the first book was barely and not like those series that the entire town of single people get married within one book series.

The premise had enough good tension for a romance and all the right ingredients and characters. I’m enjoying this series.

**4.5 Stars**

Lighthearted and smart, Intermediate Thermodynamics was a fresh and fun take on a rom-com. With Nix's unique characters, both immensely smart and well-tasked in their respective careers, their banter and intelligence played off of one other in a funny and charming way, making it easy to laugh and quickly turn the pages for more. Along with the humor was the slow, but beautiful progression from a love-hate dynamic to more, and the ease with which it was to transition from one to the other without either character noticing.

Nix penned a wonderful, well-rounded female character in Esther. Her practicality and fierce independence were strong personality traits, and yet even when she was blinded by hate flipping into love, she maintained her head while not ignoring heart even if it took everything within her to do so (and many internal swift kicks). I loved the sweetness of Jonathan, both his charm and pull, and how they were so very different from one another, but found so much of a sense of home in each other.

Filled with heart and humor, Intermediate Thermodynamics was a well-rounded story with compelling characters and a beautiful love story. As a new reader to Nix, I enjoyed getting to know her writing style and seeing her spin on romance. Well-written and unbelievably enjoyable, this is a book not to miss.

**Received an early copy; this had no bearing on my opinion**

Listening to the series is such a happy experience. I adore the smart female characters, and Esther is no exception. Jonathan is someone I relate to a lot less because he is a screen writer, which is something I am unfamiliar with. However, I really enjoyed his interactions with Esther. I think both of them experienced significant character growth throughout this book, and it gave them a real  depth.  I wasn’t the biggest fan of Esther’s friend, but for plot reasons, I understand her purpose. Her friend gave it a little bit more rudeness to the story, but I could’ve done without her. I loved how the characters from the previous book me an appearance, but in a slightly unexpected way. Overall, this is just a cute and happy romcom to read. 4⭐️, 1.5🌶
