This is a children's book that was up for a national prize but it could easily stand alone as adult fiction. The story is very grim and harrowing, and unfortunately based on true events. It revolves around a Lithuanian family deported to Russia during World War Two. I actually cried in some parts, it was so upsetting. However it was well worth persevering with.

I want to read this book again.
I don't want to let go of this story. Of these characters. Of these feelings.
This book is sad. It's full of cruelty and horrible things people have to endure. It's about strength. About compassion. About what is important. It's heartbreaking. Beautiful. Powerful. It's unique. It's about the simple power of love.
It made me laugh and smile, think and cry.
Weep and hope.
I love this book's title. I love the characters, their development, their incredible depth. The writing style.
I just love this book.

A short read, but full of emotion. If you had not heard of the deportation of the Baltic countries I highly suggest this book.

NO relation to the porn series with a similar name :). Lithuanian girl and her family seized by Stalin's forces and moved to Siberian labor camps. Pretty good read about an unfamiliar time period.

HF about the Lituanians who were deported to Siberia by the USSR during WWII, who were supported by the USA, and should have been prosecuted for war crimes as the Nazis were for their concentration camps. Based on real incidents, although only one person in the novel was a real historic figure. Well written, horrifying story, but ended too soon, and the afterward did not clarify enough of how the survivors were able to return to their homes.

Very heartbreaking story, with bits of warmth and love. Intriguing...like most people, I wasn't aware of the Lithuanians being forced into labor camps during WWII. Glad I randomly picked this one from the digital library!
