This book is an EXCELLENT guide to marketing your business and helping define your trajectory. I listened on audio to get the overall grasp of the concepts but I also have the hardcopy to now go back and hash everything out in detail. I highly recommend this book!

Hey, this was pretty good! I read this for work and while I have an innate rebellion against marketing, I found the advice here authentic, not sleazy, and incredibly concrete. This is a good one for non-sales & marketing folks to read and get advice. I love the idea of relating marketing to movie plots & stories - you’re the guide, your client is the hero. Like most books in this genre, it was white-dude-centered and there was an odd “marriage is between a man and a woman” example, which was more than a bummer, but I did get a lot of stuff I can use. Also, this book wins for most references of Tommy Boy I’ve ever read (no complaints).

Honestly, this book feels very annoying to read. The advice it gives could easily be 2-3 blog posts instead of a full book. There is a ton of fluff with all sorts of metaphors and analogies from popular movies and stories. Most of these are forced to conform to Miller's idea of StoryBrand. The concepts that he shares aren't really anything revolutionary. If anything, the concepts are fairly simple but veiled under a lot of pretense to justify building a framework around basic premises such as "put your customer's needs first". I guess it might be helpful if you've never done anything related to marketing, but this book has a bit of a "guru"-ish feel to it that makes it very annoying to get through. I guess that's a byproduct of having a salesman write a book. Thankfully it's not too long so it doesn't burn too much time.

At the end of the book, if you're not excited about getting to work on your business, you may need to check you heart.

Full of simple tactics and communications strategies that everyone should use, but few do. Includes a bunch of tools to help you apply the strategies to your business.

Hiiiiiighly recommend.

The book has two very useful core ideas:
1- Always talk about your client and their troubled vs. perfect life. Make them feel special
2- Make your writing short and snappy

Good ideas. Super useful.

The issue is that the book keeps repeating those two ideas until your eyes bleed. If you read one chapter, you've read every chapter.

There were also many plugs for the book. I already have the book. That's how I'm reading it. It felt like a very out of place CTA.

So overall, it's not a bad book, but it's pretty repetitive.

I was recommended this book by another artist to talk about using story in marketing and it was excellent. I docked a star because at times it felt like the book was selling you on their system to get you to buy into their classes, workshops etc, but the general advice and breakdown was pretty solid and offered a great structure to jump from.
