One of my top three favorite books of all time, and my favorite book from Virginia Woolf. Reading the book for the first time can feel jarring, especially if you're already familiar with Woolf's work - it's an experimental cadence for her, with the speaker not always immediately clear and fractured structures that can make it difficult to read if you aren't fully immersed. The second time you read it, it feels like breathing. The pace is beautiful and almost a meditative state. It's a quiet practice in observance and almost painful honesty.

Virginia Woolf elevates you. It's my second Virginia Woolf book and it remains a to be way too complex for my little brain. This is a book that probably requires a lot of studying from my part but she still manages to write in such a gorgeous way that even when I couldn't follow exactly, it was so engaging.
Once agin with this second book, the more I read I feel her words fill me with energy and power and it's something I don't quite experience with any other writer.

a novel about the lives of six friends - their lives starting with when they were kids. one of them passes away and they must deal with the grief after the loss.
i don't really know how to accurately describe how beautiful woolf's writing here is. it's full of honest emotion and i love the way she approached it. the style is so enchanting and dreamy and really pulled me in. i loved how detailed and descriptive it was. i loved the references to nature and art.
i did giggle a bit while reading the childhood passages, purely because the thoughts they were 'having' as children aren't thoughts that any child would be capable of forming. just wasn't all too realistic. the pacing was also a bit questionable at times but i wasn't too bothered by it.
