I thought this was an awesome book. The big ideas and scale of the book was right up my alley. The only annoyance I had was being distracted by the extensive explaining and describing that I had to backtrack a lot to know what was going on and who's who. It just felt unnecessary for a book that is around 1200 pages long.

I kept feeling like I was missing stuff so I'd go back, and nope, he was just rushing it. Which is saying something for a million page book.
Also, jeezuz, the male gaze much?
2D characters and kind of unclear explanations.
Really cool world, though. The Adam/Eve/Serpent thing seemed really interesting, too bad I won't know what happens there. Guess I'll read a summary.
I don't usually get this far into a big book and then quit, but then I realized I just didn't care. I was kind of rooting for Quinn Dexter because he felt like the only character that actually gave a shit about achieving a goal...

This is Hamilton at his most Hamilton and I loved it. It was nice to see what he does with something that isn't in the Commonwealth world, and this truly has a bit of everything. It was also nice to have him focus on a singular place and have the large cast converge onto that location. Excited to see where this goes next. John Lee audio awesome per usual.

I last & first read this when I was a teen. On rereading, I started with a smidgen of doubt: could it really be as good as I remembered? Happily, the Suck Fairy hasn't visited this one. I still love it. I didn't have many quibbles. There's A LOT of sex obsessives in the cast of characters, which got tedious fast, and the lead character tips over from roguish charm into bit-of-a-bastard territory (which I feel may be more fully addressed in the later books, but I can't remember for sure). That aside though this was a ripping yarn; thrilling, amazing, inventive space opera with a vast scope.

It took me 800 pages to realise what was stopping me from really enjoying this book: the weak characters and how little I felt for any of them. I just don't care about them at all. That makes it hard to justify polishing off the remaining 3000 pages of this trilogy.

Long for the sake of being long. Not cohesive, nothing really happens.
