Fallen University: Year One by Callie Rose is a reverse harem paranormal romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Lia Holland.

I absolutely love Callie’s books! They always leave me begging for more. I loved the chemistry between Piper, Kingston, Jayce, Xero, and Kai. I really enjoyed the fact it wasn’t insta-love between the characters and that they had to work at the connection between them all.

The book does end on a cliffhanger but that wasn’t a surprise since it’s the first book in the series. I can’t wait to dive into the next book.

Lia did a great job on the narration. I loved that she used different voices/tones for each character. It really brought the story to life.

I would recommend this book if you like reverse harems or paranormal romances.

You’ve likely heard that phrase that goes a little something like, “They have more talent in their little finger than I do in my whole body..”

THAT my friends, is the epitome of Callie Rose.

After reading Fallen University, I can imagine her in a castle setting sitting up high in a tower, dipping a feathery quill into an ink pot. When she removes the quill from the ink? All you see is glittery gold.

Without giving spoilers, the story is about a girl who is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or maybe the right place at the right time? Seeing as where it gets her, right?

Nobody likes a cheating asshole and thankfully our girl Piper doesn’t let shit fly with her boyfriend and once she’s bid him adieu she runs into who I like to think of her BFF-andeverandeverandever - because, I loved her instantly the moment they met. ;)

Some shit goes down and then they wind up somewhere (okay so I don’t want to give anything away..so just work with me here!) and it’s in this place that I had my first laugh out loud snorting moment with this book (yes..there is more than one..no shame in my snort game!)

There’s some ka-pow action and then they wind up somewhere totally new! And again..no spoilers, but it’s all good ;)

Here’s where I stop with the loose list of events because I am NOT going to tell you ANYTHING about what happens next because you need the angst and the surprise and the STEAMY GOODNESS in your life the same way I got it..when you read it!

And you should. I promise you’re not going to be disappointed. The development between the characters feels totally and completely natural! Which I think is pretty difficult to achieve with an RH that has a more fast burn feel to it, but it absolutely does NOT feel forced! That alone made me love this even more than I thought possible! <3

SO read it, now. :p

Absolutely loved this book.
Brilliant take on the demon world, the politics was well thought out and the characters were three dimensional with exploration of why they are the way they are!
The relationships were actually believable and the main character was perfectly badass and hilarious. I had lots of laughing out loud moments, this book genuinely brought me a lot of joy.
Easy to read, good spice

The premise of the story was so interesting, yet the execution fell flat af. The way the heroine just instantly accepted her change was jarring to me. Hannah, the friend who got turned alongside her, had more of a realistic reaction.

The world building was practically non-existent. There was so much promise here, but nothing was done properly, not the world building, not the relationship building, nothing. The transitions between chapters were incredibly abrupt, with the story moving forward weeks at a time, when there should have been more description for the times in between. The heroine was not likeable to me at all, she was impulsive and quick tempered, but none of the other stuff she did really made up for her annoying traits, so her cons column just became heavier than the pros column.

The heroes were all 2 dimensional characters, with no depth to any of them. There was the cheery one, the spoilt brat, the sad one and the other one for whom I don't even have a description. Honestly, the last 2 were completely interchangeable and consequntially, ignorable. At least the cheery one and the spoilt one had distinct traits, the last two didn't even have that much, and I read about 65% before jumping to the end.

I started this book with so much hope, seeing as the synopsis seemed so promising. I was thoroughly disappointed.

This felt very thin and I just couldn't get invested in the FMC. Nothing seemed to really bother her and she also didn't seem to have any goals, ambitions, or even much agency. Why didn't she try to find out what type of demon she was as soon as she learned that there were more than one type? Why didn't she seem to care why Sonya(spelling?) hated her? She is curious at one point, and tha 's when she goes exploring the school, but we essentially don't get to see any of her explorations except when she runs into two of her boys. I.e. the only time she seemed to have agency, it was purely so we'd get a scene with the boys. I just couldn't make myself care.

Maybe it was the lack of stronger expressions of emotion from the narrator, but I don't think so. I've had these issues with Callie Rose's books before. I guess she's just not a good fit for me.

Also, the "getting more people off the grid to save the environment" goal of one of the characters is so naive that it comes off as stupid. Either Callie Rose believes this without looking further into it or she believes that this is what actual environmentalists believe and is trying to come off as more aware than she really is. The FMC melting bc of this heroic idealism just made her even more difficult to care about.

I love Callie Rose. Her writing is so fantastic and her characters are so realistic, I feel like I’ve known them forever. This book is action packed. Piper gets turned into a demon and thrusted into this world she knows nothing about. I love her friend Hannah. And I love her relationship with her guys. I am looking forward to learning more about them in the next book!

Narration was perfect! She added drama and excitement. I just loved the way she brought the characters to life.
