This had all the makings of a really good book and the writing was absolutely beautiful and super poetic, but the execution fell short for me. There are a TON of important details and it made the book a little confusing. I found the details and important information hard to keep up with. While Fallon and Julian have an instant connection, they seemed to blindly trust each other even when they were still mostly strangers.

couldn’t get over the fact they were acting like 14 year olds when they’re in their 20s

i have conflicting feelings on this book…i thought the plot was really interesting and well executed and i loved fallon and julian, both as characters and as a couple, i loved the forbidden romance aspect to their relationship and no matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t stay away from each other. however, i got so confused reading this at some points but then again that could just be a Me Problem. also something about morticians makes me very uncomfortable so the main character being a mortician wasn’t great for that. aside from that i really liked the ending of this book so i guess the good outweighs the bad

Top 5 read of the year for me. Absolutely PERFECT. The Halloween vibes were immaculate. Everything about it made me feel like I was transported to the magical town of Weeping Hollow.

Fallon has always felt like an outcast and when she receives a letter from her grandfather and last remaining relative requesting her to Weeping Hollow for his failing health, she packs up and moves.

What she doesn't know is that she's a witch, though her magic is dormant. When she arrives in the town the real truth of her family's history is uncovered.

Fallon must be careful of those in the town seeking her power, and she should be careful of the Hollow Heathens, four cursed witches who cannot show their faces without imparting instant death.

She finds herself drawn to the one with the silver eyes, Julian, even though she cannot ever see his whole face. She's supposed to be banned from interacting with him but they can't stop each other.

They both realize there are greater forces at play with their attraction, and despite what the town thinks, they are destined for each other and perhaps the key to breaking the curse of the Hollow Heathens.

Hollow Heathens: Book of Blackwell
⭐️⭐️⭐️

This had SO much potential...

It's kind of my fault that I didn't like it that much because I continuously compared Julian to Ollie.

So Fallon and Julian had this insta love that I couldn't deal with, because I couldn't connect with either of the characters and therefore their romance lacked credibility. It was like the author was trying to convince me they fit together or their relationship was meant to be, like girl don't tell me try to show me.

She's not the strongest main character out there, and I was expecting her to be headstrong like Mia. Again, my fault for comparing it to the Stay with me series.

The writing style is weak and not advanced at all, I honestly felt like there was no flow. I want to get my lil cute tweezers and pluck all the overused exclamation marks out of the text.

The plot was okay, the world-building had so much potential but was weakly executed (in my opinion), and the character felt so artificial. Of course they are fictional, but give me something here!

Weeping Hollow is a town that you dream of getting lost in. The cozy small town vibe that makes you want to sit by a fire drinking hot coffee or cider with your friends. This book got me out of a huge reading slump and introduced me to a whole new genre of reading possibilities.

Fallon is a girl with no family save for her grandfather Benny who she recently finds out has fallen ill. She travels to Weeping Hollow so she can help him heal or be there for him if he passes on. What she does not know yet is once you are in Weeping Hollow there is no leaving.

Julian our MMC carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. He wears a mask of arrogance and indifference to protect those he loves most. I love Julians character development throughout this novel. He starts out believing he is the monster everyone claims him to be, only to realize there are monsters in all of us. It's how we choose to be that dictates monster or hero.

✑ HOLLOW HEATHENS, by Nicole Fiorina 🌙📜
rating: ★★★.75

I have to say that my favourite thing about this book was the atmosphere. Honestly, the vibes were immaculate; however, as the story progressed, I began losing focus. I think most of this was due to the pacing of the book. There was a revelation; you would think the story was about to pick up, and then BAM! That was it. We'd be back to Fallon waking up in her room. Although, if I'm being honest, I loved those mundane moments where Fallon was describing her life in Weeping Hollow, but not after big scenes.

Another aspect I loved was the Heathens. I so wish we could have gotten so much more from them and their dynamic, but I'm holding out hope that in the upcoming books, we'll be able to delve more into them. I can't wait for Phoenix books.

ALSO! Nicole, please stop teasing us and give us some sign that we'll be able to read Bone Island in the future.
