So according you this book, sleep is a pretty big deal.
The author is a neuroscientist who researches sleep and his passion for sleep is evident from the style of writing and the wide range of sleep related topics - including touching on genetic factors in sleep rhythms, sleep across the lifespan, dreams (parts on nightmares in PTSD and lucid dreaming were particularly interesting) and how lack of sleep will ruin us physically, emotionally, financially…it’s a bit scary.

Sometimes he draws links between sleep and poor outcomes and I wanted him to be a bit more critical of other additional factors - e.g. people who sleep poorly often have difficulty looking after their health in other ways too. I would have also liked him to look closer at productivity culture (workplace attitudes are touched on) and why we push people to work such long hours at the detriment to their performance and wellbeing.

Disappointed to have been misled. I listened to this audiobook and found out after that the author manipulated data. Now I will be trying to determine if things I think I know about sleep are from this book or not, and will doubt them if they are. Manipulation was plainly not an accident coming from an academic, but the publish/perish and financial incentives of academia and book publishing (respectively) are probably tough to resist. As an example, removing the nonlinearity from a bar graph and claiming it is linear is hard to do unintentionally. I'll revise if the author ever publicly apologizes and holds themselves to a higher scientific standard, as people should be given a chance to grow from their mistakes.

One of the most comprehensive compilations of high-level scientific data out there of all things sleep. The best I've encountered so far in terms of depth and sheer richness of examples and discussions on the importance and consequences of both good and bad sleep habits, length, quality, etc. A must for everyone interested in improving their quality of life, cognitive functions, productivity in all senses including immunological, biological, restoration, attention deficit regulations, and overall living longer and with better quality. I now place much bigger importance on sleep and I can absolutely understand where the side effects come from when I don't get enough rest over time. A must for any insomnia sufferers out there. That said, be prepared to feel like any sleep you don't get might generate anxiety, now that you know all consequences, but I think more knowledge is never a bad thing.

This is a great book!
I have known how important sleep is, but all the informations and knowledge in the book are so practical.
As a teacher, it makes me think about the school schedule and how we most likely complicate the lives of young pupils.

It's really quite fascinating and saddening, how people can destroy their lives without even noticing.

Updated: Reduced from 5 to 3 stars after coming to understand the author (perhaps accidentally) fudged/exaggerated facts. Booo! I really enjoyed the book, got lots out of it, but that sh*t don’t fly.

Wow! Picked up this book to motivate myself to prioritize sleep more, and it worked. lol. I was floored by the health, learning, safety and productivity impacts of not getting enough sleep. This book is less of a how-to-sleep-better (though tips are included) and much more of a fascinating deep dive into sleep research and what we know about impacts of short sleep. As a therapist, I will now be spending much more time emphasizing importance of sleep with my employees and clients. Definitely would recommend!
