This book was so much fun! A counselor suggested meditation to me for my anxiety/negative inner monologue, and when she did I swallowed hard. Oh no, I thought, I'm going to have to become some granola soul-searcher. When I saw this book was on its way, I knew I was interested immediately. It reads very quickly and is very approachable, making meditation something you can embrace even if you're a bit cynical like me. It also made me want to check out more resources, like the ones my counselor suggested, knowing I could still approach them from my less-than-mystic perspective and be alright. I'm excited to get going now, with this kind of permission and perspective. Plus it was just plain funny, too. I recommend!

wigging out doesn't seem on brand after finishing a book on meditation, but I'm just so upset with myself. the warning signs were there from the get go. a book with a bad title stinks. shocker.

other warning signs:
microdose
freerange
google employees who meditated huffed glue 15% better after the fact
moby
casting shade on any trace of eastern influence
cops and soldiers can meditate and not turn gay
an endless cadre of board members for an app that wanted my money immediately

there are genuinely helpful strats for getting into meditation and sticking with it right here in this very book. just have to wade through some unnecessary suffering to get there. so like dont

(mindfulness in plain english by gunaratana is a better place to start. it is boring. tough shit.)

Not a bad book. Not bad writing. Just too personal/anecdotal for my taste. Might have gotten better if I read more but the library needed it back 😅

If I hadn’t read 10% Happier, I’d have rated it 4 stars. The comparison makes this weaker, and 10% happier is more solid as a 4 star book.

I listened to this on audiobook and absolutely loved it! I have totally been a skeptic of meditation and I can’t sit still to save my life. I married a Buddhist and he meditates off and on but I haven’t really made myself do it but lately it’s been brought up more and more in my circles of friends and I’ve been trying to do it more and more. I loved the tips in this book and the meditations that it included. The only complaint I have with it was at times it was a little bit repetitive which I felt slowed it down. Other than that I found it very relatable and informative.
