I want to give this book 3.5 stars. It was fine, something I could reread in the summer if I could not afford new books. It was good, I did enjoy reading it but it took me quite some time to finish it.
Oh and it did make me cry twice, so there's that..
It's the kind of book where you bring it and another one along with you on vacation. Then you read the second one you brought first, loving that one and then afterwards starting to read this book. You end up getting maybe 1/3 into it before putting it down and forgetting it.
I kept putting it down and forgetting it, then start it again. That repeating itself a few times. But, again, I did enjoy reading the book and there were even parts where I did not want to lay it down.

Probably great to bring with you when you are going on a vacation, where you will be quite busy and only have time to read it before bed!

These books are a guilty pleasure. I remind myself of that as I’m reading otherwise it might wear on me a bit when things like rape, murder, and war get glossed over rather quickly. I like the storyline that a Princess can go off and do relief work and fall in love. I like reading about fancy places in Europe. I don’t like the repetitiveness, we all get that she’s a good girl, and will perform her duties. The ending felt rushed, but everything was all wrapped up in the end!

This book was okay.

I liked the idea of the story of a princess traveling to Africa as a volunteer, and I enjoyed the second half of the book.

I was disappointed in the first half of the book. I expected more romance, but Christianna and Parker didn't end up meeting until halfway through the novel.

HRH by Danielle Steel
She is raised by her father, the king of their little country closeby to Russia and he's doing a fine job til her teen years and her mother has died.
Her 10 year older brother is a playboy and goes from country to country accumulating women and cars and having fun. She is in prison at the palace but she does visit her wild cousin in England from time to time but her interests are so different than Christians.
She is drilled from birth about duty to the country and people of the country. Her father knows the son will never lead the country and hopes she will some day. She does talk him into letting her help out with children Red Cross events that occur and is brought home a woman from what she experienced.
Rather than going to charity evens, opening hospital wings, etc she'd rather be doing something that will make a difference in her life and she finds it. Helping doctors without borders in SA and she has to take her body guards along and check in from time to time but things change her even further there...
Love all the detailed descriptions of the places she visited.

H.R.H by Danielle Steel (1 Star)

And here it is, the worst book of the year so far. In fact, it is the worst I’ve read in a very long time.

H.R.H is about a Princess Christiana of a small European country who is bored of her life, so she becomes a Red Cross volunteer and goes to Africa. She is due to return after a short time, but when she falls in love with an American Doctor it all gets a bit complicated.

As I was writing that, I rolled my eyes. I really struggled to care about Christiana. She was hardly living a tough life, yes she was a little bored and had little privacy – so what! I found her self-pity incredibly self indulgent and off putting. So what if she had duties to fulfil, it didn’t make her different from anyone else. She was snobbish whilst trying to appear a bit of a martyr.

Anyhow, before I rant about poor rich people, I’ll talk about the writing. It was dire. I was so surprised because the previous Steel book I read, I really enjoyed. I don’t know whether this book was written before the other but either way, it was dreadful. The prose was repetitive, she reused metaphor and similes. I felt like I was rereading it over and over again and getting nowhere.

The characters were stock and flat, slotted in to suit the purpose of the plot. It was all a little too perfect. Even the violence was contrived.

I really hated the romance. Again there was no real build up – it just sort of happened. It felt like a teenager had written it, there was no depth to it. Suddenly there was attraction and then before you know it, there was love. It is easy to believe that in a young adult story where the emotional maturity of the characters is younger, but in a story where the characters are much older it is so hard to believe.

Nope. I hated this book. I can excuse a dull plot for good writing. Hell, I can excuse bad writing for a good plot. But, when the two are combined and both plot and writing are bad – well then, I’ve wasted my time.

I've read Danielle Steele books in the distant past and fluff though they may be, I've enjoyed them. Picked this up at my host's on a weekend away from home and was thoroughly disappointed. The book was 90% tell with little show--almost as if it was a plan for what the author wanted to write and not the story. In addition, it was soooooo repetitive. Literally to the point of having something mentioned again only two pages after the first mention, so it's not as if I had a chance to forget it. And the dramatic resolution at the end of the book felt like such a cop-out. So many better books out there,  even by this author. I'd skip this one.
