Firstly, let's start by saying this book has the perfect title as it has absolutely ruined me. I write this review with my cheeks still wet from tears. Once again J C Hawke has completely smashed it out of the park, and I do not know how I will wait for part 2.

The Grand Ruin is part one of Lance & Scarlett’s love story from a dual POV.

We learn bits and pieces about Lance and Scarlett in the previous 'Grand’ books, however this takes it to a new personal level.

Lance & Scarlett start off with a chance meeting when Scarlett is going to meet her brother for her birthday lunch of course nothing ever goes to plan, and drama ensues. Here we get grumpy Lance and feisty Scarlett.

Scarlett then discovers Lance works for her brother (Mason). After his grumpiness she decides she wants to play games and mess with Lance and along comes some great humor and sexual tension.

Skip forward Scarlett is then attending an event that Lance is going to and the vibe and pull between them is great.

As the story progresses Scarlett & Lance get to know more about each and their “interesting” family circumstances. Scarlett cares for her unwell father which is why she's almost a recluse, dropped out of uni and doesn’t really have any friends, after meeting Mason’s new girlfriend Nina she ends up with 3 new friends and Lance encourages her to live her life, be young, free and have fun. Upon pushing for this Lance helps to look after her dad.

Lance’s family circumstances aren’t great either but in an entirely different way, Lance’s mum and sisters treat him like a cash cow and when he cuts the money, the way they treat him is vile, Scarlett witness’ all of this and it of course makes her feeling towards Lance even stronger.

As they learn more and more about each other the sexual tension breaks and goodness me it is FIRERY HOT! The sex is just top tier.

Lance and Scarlett make a few mistakes along the way, some small and some very big.

The sex scenes are just phenomenal in this book.

Do they fall in love? That is the big question...I am of course not going to go into detail as this is a no spoiler review.

This book ends on a cliff hanger as there is a part two, do not let this put you off because the book is utter perfection, J C Hawke’s writing is just fantastic, she is one of the best authors I have ever read.

I will quote one line from the book here “I like to call them literary queens. The givers of the world, doing the lord’s work” what a quote because this is exactly what J C Hawke is.

I cannot explain enough how amazing this book is and the ones before it “Mason & Nina’s Story and Elliot & Lucy’s.”

Do not walk, RUN to get this book in paperback or on your kindle, I promise you will not regret it.

This is an absolute 5-star read with 5-star spice.

The Grand series in it’s entirety is just fantastic and this one is no exception. I love getting to see more of our favourite characters from previous books as they make appearances through this one. The timeline follows the Grand Lies/Grand Love books (except through Scarlet and Lance’s perspectives) so if you haven’t read those first, you may find some of the narrative surrounding Mason and Nina kind of odd.
I was not prepared for Lance Sullivan. I was intrigued by him in earlier books and love how Hawke wrote him as a troubled bad boy who is secretly mushy and romantic. His edge and family history made him a complex character and the way he falls head over heels for Scarlet is delightful.

Ending on a cliffhanger is rough but we knew it was happening so I’m just going to not so patiently wait for The Grand Rise.

Tropes- Grumpy/sunshine, he falls first, brother’s best friend, secret relationship, found family

I’ve tried to write this review since the moment I finished the story and I’m truly struggling coming up with how to put in to words how this book has made me feel.

The Grand Ruin is hands down one of the best books I’ve ever read. I am truly wrecked. I knew from reading the previous books that Lance and Scarlet’s story was going to be beautiful, tragic, and heart wrenching, but every expectation and hopes I had for their story was exceeded by a landslide. This is a story that will live with me forever. The spice was great and just like this entire story it was beautifully done. For all the moments that may make you sad, there are so many moments that will make you laugh and help put you back together. I loved how we got to see into so many pieces of Lance and Scar’s life both as a couple and as individuals. We also get to see pieces of characters from the entire series from Lance and Scar’s POV which I really enjoyed! I knew this would end on a cliffhanger but boy my heart was not fully prepared at all! I need The Grand Rise to be out now, I’m not prepared to wait!

Loved this book and Lance&Scarlett who I kept seeing glismpes of within the books of the other couples so it is really nice to finally see their story and how they came to be. Can’t wait for p2.
Side note, I hope Charlie & Megan get their own story, I can see them being a match!

A solid 4 stars.

Absolutely loved this as part of this little universe of friends. Also want to die a little because it had a cliffhanger and I was so hyped to read the WHOLE story but that just makes me more excited for the next.

I can’t even say how much I fell for Lance and Scarlet. The way they just could not stay out of each others lives, starting off a little rough and then all the way into full romance frolicking under the stars (literally) head of heels in love with each other.

These two characters so desperately need each other, with Lance’s family being leeches and Scarlett’s dad relying heavily on her but not really be able to support her and her brother being wildly unreliable because of his own issues. They both needed someone to confide in, someone who would never let them down and this is just the perfect read as you watch them grow closer and lean on each other.

Unlike book of a similar wavelength where all the characters connect but the books take place one after another, I would definitely recommend reading the previous books in the series as this one runs alongside them, with events happening at the same time to a different degree of detail.
Sometimes this was a little tiring to read as it felt quite repetitive reading events I’ve already seen before. But Scarlett and Lance’s POV’s are very different experiences from Mason and Nina‘s so it wasn’t too much of an issue and I still loved it just as much, if not more.

”If it’s not life-altering—messy, crazed love, capable of tearing me apart—I don’t want it.”

I’m honestly still trying to find the words after reading this book. Scarlet and Lance’s story pulled at every single one of my heart strings. I laughed, I cried, I felt like I couldn’t read fast enough. A chance meeting in an elevator that went all sorts of wrong intertwined their lives in ways I don’t think either of them even saw coming. Lance was grumpy and egotistical and Scarlet gave it back to him ten fold. They saw through one another’s masks and were the fit. I knew when I started this book it was going to be everything, as JC Hawke’s writing feels that way every time. This is one story that’s going to stick with me and I already can’t wait for the second part.

Lance and Scarlet story is kind of heartbreaking. I feel like something was always going against them but they would always come back together. They truly love each other. I absolutely love that Lance falls first and all he wants to do is make sure Scar is being taken care of. I never would have thought Lance could be one of the most caring characters in this group based on the other books but I was pleasantly surprised. But Lance is very possessive, he’s attentive, and he’s persuasive all of which scar needs. JC Hawke did an amazing job writing their story. I can’t wait for my heart to be put back together in book 2!
