I absolutely loved Shade, and I wasn’t expecting anything less from myself for this book.

But less than halfway through the book, I was bummed because I didn’t feel as invested in this sequel. Some parts seem to drag on, and I felt like I was losing interest in the story overall. But less than 15 pages later, the book picked up, and I was HOOKED again. I finished over 200 pages in one sitting because I couldn’t stop.

I definitely shed the same amount of tears for this one, and I absolutely love the way this book ended. Forever #TeamLogan. Now, onto book 3! I’m so invested in this, and I just know I’m going to be broken after this is over.

*If you haven't read the first book, there are spoilers in this review.*

Woah! Where to begin? After reading the first book in the series titled Shade, I didn't know what to expect with Shift. With the ending that the reader is left with in the first book, you can't even imagine what the author has in store for us. I never expected a sequel to a book to be as amazing -- if not better -- than the first. Usually the first book is the best of the bunch, but Shift surpassed my expectations and left my heart in pieces.

Shift picks up immediately where Shade leaves off. At the end of Shade, Logan went dark and turned Shade. When he returns to Aura in her bedroom though, Aura is able to bring him back to ghost form. No Shade has ever been brought back from turning Shade. Even with this shocker revealed, the author still has plenty of punches to throw at the reader involving Logan that will shock you even more! I am not going to say what the main thing is, but expect it to not only tear at your heart but also mess with Aura and her heart.

Zachary starts to lose his patience with Aura in this book. I can understand his frustration, but I felt the things he does -- like prom night -- were out of character. After the first book, I was clearly Team Zach. With this book in the series though, I leaned more towards Logan. I just didn't like how the author was taking Zachary on the road he was walking on. In Shade, you can feel the devotion and love he has for Aura, but in Shift I felt that he was true to character. I never wanted a character to suffer as much as I did Becca after that Prom!

While we are on the subject of the prom, can I get a 'Hell Yeah' for Dylan Keeley? The way he stood up to Zachary and the things he said to him. I jumped out of my seat and wanted to hug him fiercely! He really matures in Shift and has become such a great character to read about. When he calls Aura over to his house one day and shares a notebook with her, I almost wanted to cheer for a Team Dylan badge. He melted my heart and left a grin on my face.

When pieces of the puzzle of the Shift are revealed though through a recurring character, I could see the picture coming together. Let me say that this is one portrait I can't wait to see finished. Secrets are revealed to Aura and more surface to keep it going. The ending was beautiful and fitting for a star like Logan.

I smiled. I cried. I cheered. I cried some more. This book will not only make you sigh with the sweetness of love, but leave you crying like a newborn baby. I don't think I have cried so much from a book in a long time. Were the tears worth it? Oh yeah. I already have a new box of tissue sitting beside me so I can be ready for even more emotional and amazing writing that author Jeri Smith-Ready has mastered with this series! Aye!

When we left off in the last book, Aura’s boyfriend, Logan, had died and came back as a ghost, only to shift into a terrifying shade. Aura has discovered that she was the first person to be able to see ghosts after the Shift, and friend/love interest Zachary was the last to not be able to see them. The authorities are watching them carefully, sensing that Aura and Zach may know more about the Shift than they let on. Now Logan has come back from being a shade to being a ghost once again, and Aura and Zach can’t seem to work out their issues. That’s not all. Aura finds out that her mother may have had a great deal to do with the Shift, and that she may have left clues about it before she died. Now Aura must deal with her dead ex, her Scottish love interest, the authorities, and her mother’s memory in order to find out why the Shift happened, and what it has to do with her.

I wasn’t crazy about the first book in this series, Shade. I thought that there was WAY too much emphasis on sex in that book. This book has it too (you’ll see it in the first chapter), but it did seem toned down a bit. Aura’s relationships with Logan, Zachary, and Logan’s younger brother (!?) all get complicated in this book, and while we know who she needs to end up with, the story takes a while to get there.

The mysterious “Shift” that is introduced in the first book comes closer to being explained. There is a mystical backstory to Aura’s mother that we get to see, and that was probably my favorite part of the story. I hope that in the next book this is taken even further. Aura and Zachary both exhibit some strange powers in this book, too, emphasizing that they are special where the Shift is concerned.

If you liked Shade, you really should read Shift. I liked it better than the first book, and I think readers will appreciate where the story goes.

If you liked “Shade”, you’re going to love “Shift”. Actually, I liked Shift even better than the first one. I thought Shade was a good book, but enjoyed this one so much more.

A quick recap – any children born after The Shift can see ghosts. People born before cannot. Ghosts appear as violet apparitions. But if they turn “bad”, they become shades, dark spirits who make those who can see them sick. The main character, Aura, was the first child born after the Shift. Her friend, Zachary, was the last child born before the Shift. They are tied together somehow, but neither one knows exactly how. Aura definitely has feelings for Zack, but there’s a problem – Logan – Aura’s boyfriend, who died on his 17th birthday and is now a ghost.

This book starts exactly where the first one left off so it is a true sequel. Logan is still a ghost and still trying to find himself. He does finally “grow up” by the end of the book and do what is right for Aura and not just himself. Aura splits her time between helping Logan prepare for his final concert and searching for the answer to her questions about her birth and her father. She and Zack have an on-again/off-again relationship that reaches a peak at the prom. They eventually settle their differences but it takes a lot to get there, especially on Aura’s part. Logan’s shifting from ghost to shade doesn’t help matters, instead only making things more difficult for Aura.

The story has mystery, kidnapping, action, angst, and more as Zack’s father develops cancer, much like Aura’s mother did. The mystery of how his father and her mother knew each other continues to deepen as well as their connection to Eowyn, their mentor. Zack is there when Aura finds out the truth and helps her deal with the fallout. They also discover a unique quality that each possesses – and can share – with the other.

We learn a lot of answers in this book and I can’t wait to see what new adventures “Shine” brings to this series.

After totally falling in love with Shade, I had very high expectations for Shift. And I was not disappointed! Shift carries on from where we left Aura and Logan at the end of Shade. What goes down next only adds to the confusion and mystery surrounding the Shift. Aura continues to face the challenges of uncovering the secrets of the Shift and now she must also discover the secrets about her mother. With the help of Zachary, Aura finds life changing information about who she really is.

Along with everything else going on, Aura also has to struggle with her feelings for both Logan and Zachary. Each have a place in her heart but she knows that she can't maintain a relationship with Logan and her strong bond with Zachary only confirms her feelings.

I loved the twists and turns in this book. There were defiantly some shocking moments with the characters, especially with Zachary. There was one scene in which I wanted to scream at him for being so stupid! There were also some really heart felt moments which may have brought one or two (thousand) tears to my eyes. And of course, there were defiantly some super hot scenes!

I also felt like I got to know a bit more about the other characters like Dylan and Megan, who just add to the awesomeness of the story. As for Aura herself, I think she is a fabulous lead character and I certainly can't blame her for being torn between Zachary and Logan because they are both super hot characters. Jeri has officially made me want to move to Scotland immediately in order to find a Zachary of my own!

Definitely one of my favourite books of this year so far. This is a sizzling hot read that you won't want to put down! I actually cannot wait for the final book, Shine, to be released in May 2012 (do I have to wait that long?!)

Don't forget to connect with Jeri on Twitter, she is super nice!

Logan is back! And he’s still thinking in terms of living, meaning not moving on. Aura just wishes she could have one move minute with him, where she can touch him and comfort him. So what happens when she is granted fifteen?

Aura is still holding on to Logan, and Zachary might have been patient before but by now he is just frustrated. After weeks apart Aura realizes she wants Zachary more than ever, but just when they’re ready to be a couple officially another weird power pops up. One that might risk their lives and everyone else’s, and so they stay away from each other even if it tears them apart. Aura and Zachary had a LOT to work through in this second novel. It was heart wrenching at times, but necessary in the long run.

Now that Logan is back in the spotlight the secret of her powers is at risk of being exposed. Aura finds out more about her mother and what really happened at the ruins in Britain. She also finds out who her real father was. The DMP however doesn’t like any of this and will do their best to capture not just Logan, but Aura and Zachary as well.

This series has really had a field day with my emotions, and I’m not even sure why. It’s really hard for me to get teary eyed while reading, yet I found myself carrying a Kleenex everywhere while reading this. I love how music is incorporated in this series. I found myself looking up the songs in YouTube more than once. And trust me, Logan’s final concert needs to be read while listening to the song he sings for Aura, Run by Snow Patrol. On a side observation, hurray for Mini Coopers of all colors.

It’s such a darn long time to wait for Shine, but trust me I’ll be the first one in line getting it when it comes out. After all, the final part is set in Britain. Did I mention I’m obsessed with Britain?

I love this series, with its ghost seeing postshifters and non-ghost seeing preshifters. Author Jeri Smith-Ready has really taken an innovative idea and ran with it and has written, so far, two really good books that I cannot seem to get enough of. Aura was the first born to the postshifters and in that case she is the one that caused for everyone to see ghosts. Zach is the last of the preshifters so he cannot see ghosts. In fact, ghosts flee from the sight of him. Aura is confused for her feelings for Zach. She wants to be with him but she cannot help but miss her recently deceased and now shade boyfriend Logan. But when Logan comes back to her he turns form shade into a ghost then into a human. Aura is overcome with emotion and finds herself almost doing the deed with Logan while he is human for those 15 minutes.
But when Logan turns back into a ghost they both are confused about why that is. Overcome with sadness and guilt she tells Zach how she almost lost her virginity to Logan...again. Zach becomes angry and the two of them decide to part ways, which leads to Zach asking Becca (Aura's enemy) to the prom over her. Aura is upset but decides to go with Logan's younger brother Dylan. Things heat up between the pairs at prom and Aura finds comfort over losing Zach to Becca in Dylan's arms.
It is a bit twisted that she is making out with her dead boyfriends little brother and even contemplating about having sex with him but then again, she is grieving. She has lost her boyfriend and her sort of new boyfriend just within a few months of each other. But she needs Zach to finish her school project and to help figure out the secret behind the shift. A lot of things unfold within this book and it is up to Aura and to use Zach to help her find herself again, find the secrets of her and her mothers past, help Logan pass on, and to figure out what caused the shift all together.

I liked this book it made me sad at times and happy at others. Smith-Ready is a good writer, and her work flows without any hiccups. I enjoy reading Aura's story but it is hard for me to choose which male lead I like better for her. I love Logan, because even though he is dead he still exudes confidence and still loves Aura. Zach on the other hand, may love Aura but he still seems to put other things before her, but is it because he loves her that he is willing to let her go? These are the same words Zach uses while challenging Logan. But Logan is kind-hearted he is just a bit into himself, but Aura knows that. I would like to know what would happen if Logan became human again, would she and Zach me history or would they still be together? The book ends with Logan possibly passing on in the cemetery in front of his grave, while Aura watches, but we do not actually get to know if he really did pass on or if he is still stuck in his limbo. Zach is getting on a plane with his family and heading back to the UK. But he made plans for him and Aura to meet in the same place where his father and mother met for the Solstice, where everything changed. Together will they be able to stop the shift?

Mini-Review: An emotional roller coaster that will leave you breathless and craving more.

My Thoughts:

Things are even harder for Aura in Shift. Her relationship with Logan is more complicated than ever, and the bond between her and Zachary is put to the test. A lot. And even though she's drawn to both boys, Aura must finally make her choice: will she give up on Logan to be with Zachary or will she let her love for Logan sabotage her intense feelings for Zachary?

Jeri Smith-Ready made a fangirl out of me with Shade. It was spectacular. Logan. Zachary. LOVE. Book two is just as, if not more than, enchanting as Shade. Aura's life goes from complicated and strange to all out weird and intense in the second installment to Smith-Ready's YA series. Romance, ghosts, Scottish accents... what more could you possibly want? A little intrigue? Good, because there's plenty.

I couldn't put it down, and now I can't wait for next (and sadly last) book in the trilogy. Mystery, more accents, steamy moments with gorgeous boys. Yes, please! If you haven't picked up Shade yet, I highly recommend it, and then I suggest getting a copy of the sequel ASAP.
